Lively: 'No Feud With Ferrera'

22 August 2008 5:04 AM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Blake Lively has laughed off rumours of a feud with Ugly Betty star America Ferrera.

Ferrera was seen rolling her eyes as Lively was asked about her TV hit Gossip Girl when the pair appeared together on a U.S. news show earlier this month.

The two actresses were promoting new movie The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2, in which they both appear.

But Lively insists she and Ferrera are the best of friends - and she doesn't blame her for appearing exasperated on the news show.

Lively explains, "I haven't even heard about it. I don't ever pay attention to that stuff.

"She's one of my best friends in the whole wide world and honestly, when you're sitting in a room for three hours doing satellite interviews... We were staring at a Post-It (note) with a smiley face, so I think I probably rolled my eyes a hundred times. I'm like, 'Oh gosh, this thing is still going on?'"

Tropic Thunder Rumbles Over Dark Knight

19 August 2008 10:38 AM, PDT | From Studio Briefing | See recent Studio Briefing news

The box-office began to settle into its usual end-of-summer blahs last weekend, with Tropic Thunder, the final blockbuster release of the season, leading the pack with just $25.8 million. Warner Bros.' previously unstoppable The Dark Knight couldn't even crack $20 million, winding up with $16.4 million in its fifth week (and also winding up on the No. 2 spot on the all-time list, behind Titanic). An animated Star Wars variation, Star Wars: The Clone Wars debuted with $14.6 million. Another newcomer, the horror flick Mirrors, which was not screened for critics, wound up with $11.2 million. Dropping from second to fifth place was Pineapple Express, which settled for $9.8 million. Overall, the top 12 films grossed $111.7 million, down 2 percent from last year's $114 million.

The top ten films over the weekend, according to final figures compiled by Media by Numbers (figures in parentheses represent total gross to date):1. Tropic Thunder, Paramount, $25,812,796, 1 Wk. ($36,845,588) -- From Wednesday); 2. The Dark Knight, Warner Bros., $16,379,293, 5 Wks. ($471,082,150); 3. Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Warner Bros., $14,611,273, (New); 4. Mirrors, Fox, $11,161,074, (New); 5. Pineapple Express, Sony $9,808,295, 2 Wks. ($62,740,789); 6. The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, Universal, $8,205,720, 3 Wks. ($86,245,775); 7. Mamma Mia!, Universal, $6,096,250, 5 Wks. ($116,013,715); 8. Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2, Warner Bros., $5,785,250, 2 Wks. ($32,002,712); 9. Step Brothers, Sony, $4,807,904, 4 Wks. Stormy Weather At Box Office

18 August 2008 10:26 AM, PDT | From Studio Briefing | See recent Studio Briefing news

The Dark Knight's reign as the box-office leader ended propitiously over the weekend as it raked in an additional $16.8 million to become the second-highest grossing film of all time domestically. It has now taken in $471.5 million. Over the past 30 years, the previous No. 2, the original Star Wars, had taken in $461 million. The all-time champ is 1997's Titanic with $601 million. Although it opened with a much smaller gross than Knight, Titanic continued to average around $35 million weekly through its first three months of release. Opening on December 21, 1997, it did not dip below $20 million until the first weekend of April. By that time it had already taken in $515 million. Knight was taken down by the comedy Tropic Thunder which made a modest debut with $26 million. (On a per-theater basis, it was also beaten by the Woody Allen movie Vicky Cristina Barcelona, which averaged $5,361 at 692 theaters, while Knight averaged $4,677 at 3,590 theaters.) The animated Star Wars: The Clone Wars debuted with $15.5 million, while the horror film Mirrors opened with $11.1 million. In its second weekend Pineapple Express dropped a whopping 57 percent to place fifth with $10 million. Overall, the box-office total was nearly identical to the comparable weekend a year ago, suggesting that the Olympic Games telecasts had little impact on ticket sales. (Then again, all of the top films advertised heavily on the telecasts).

The top ten films for the weekend, according to studio estimates compiled by Media by Numbers:1. Tropic Thunder, $26 million; 2. The Dark Knight, $16.8 million; 3. Star Wars: The Clone Wars, $15.5 million; 4. Mirrors, $11.1 million; 5. Pineapple Express, $10 million; 6. The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, $8.6 million; 7. Mamma Mia!, $6.5 million; 8. The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2, $5.9 million; 9. Step Brothers, $5 million; 10. Vicky Cristina Barcelona, $3.7 million.

Can Knight Beat Titanic?

12 August 2008 10:36 AM, PDT | From Studio Briefing | See recent Studio Briefing news

The Dark Knight has come within striking distance of displacing the original Star Wars as the second-highest-grossing movie of all time. Final weekend figures released by Media by Numbers on Monday indicated that the latest Batman sequel grossed $26.1 million over the weekend to keep it at No. 1 for the fourth consecutive week. It has now grossed $441.32 million, or about $20 million short of Star Wars' achievement. However, it's far behind the George Lucas classic when inflation is taken into account. If tickets in 1977, when Star Wars came out, had cost what they do today, the movie would have earned $1.23 billion -- an amount The Dark Knight has no chance of equaling. (When adjusted for inflation the top film of all time is Gone With the Wind, which would have made $1.26 billion in today's dollars.) Analysts also suggest that it has no chance of equaling the $600 million (unadjusted for inflation) that Titanic took in a decade ago. Indeed Warner Bros. distribution chief Dan Fellman conceded as much in an interview appearing in today's (Tuesday) Hollywood Reporter. "Titanic was once in a lifetime, and I don't think we'll ever have another gross like that in the history of the industry," Fellman said.

The top ten films over the weekend, according to final figures compiled by Media by Numbers (figures in parentheses represent total gross to date):1. The Dark Knight, Warner Bros., $26,117,030, 4 Wks. ($441,628,497); 2. Pineapple Express, Sony, $23,245,025, 1 Wks. ($41,318,736 (From Wednesday); 3. The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, Universal, $16,490,970, 2 Wks. ($71048920); 4. Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2, Warner Bros., $10,678,430, 1 Wks. ($19,620,128 (From Wednesday); 5. Step Brothers, Sony, $9,128,662, 3 Wks. ($81132136); 6. Mamma Mia!, Universal, $8,208,580, 4 Wks. ($104,144,505); 7. Journey to the Center of the Earth, Warner Bros., $4,871,478, 5 Wks. ($81,775,323); 8. Hancock, Sony, $3,317,450, 5 Wks. ($221,726,791); 9. Wall-e, Disney, $3140083, 7 Wks. ($210,206,582); 10. Swing Vote, Disney, $3,125,290, 2 Wks. ($12,020,828).

Actress Aghdashloo Refuses To Return To Iran

11 August 2008 12:10 PM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Iranian-born actress Shohreh Aghdashloo has vowed never to quit the U.S. to return home - because she would endure severe scrutiny for her movie-making.

The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2 star, 56, left Iran over 20 years ago to escape repression in her native country.

And Aghdashloo insists she and her family have no plans to return after having embraced American culture - because she says Iranians resent her success in Hollywood.

She says, "Their repressed Muslim government hates the fact that I am an actress. But they still all see my movies, even though my films are not allowed to be shown there.

"But everything's under the table. Everyone sells on the black market. They get pirated copies, and then someone copies the copies.

Knight Once Again Wins The Gold

11 August 2008 10:33 AM, PDT | From Studio Briefing | See recent Studio Briefing news

In its fourth weekend, The Dark Knight moved within striking distance of the original Star Wars to claim the title of the second-highest-grossing movie of all time. With its domestic gross now standing at $441.5 million, the movie should overtake the George Lucas classic, which has had several rereleases that have brought its total to $461 million. At its current pace, it should surpass that figure by next weekend. Nevertheless, box office analysts give the movie scant chance of breaking Titanic's record of $601 million. Once again, the Batman movie wound up at the top of the box-office heap with $26 million, beating out the debut of the stoner comedy Pineapple Express, which earned $22.4 million, according to industry estimates. It was the first movie to hold on to the box office crown for four consecutive weeks since Lord of the Rings: Return of the King did so in 2003. The only other movie to open wide was Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2, which landed in fourth place with $10.8 million, behind The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor with $16.1 million. Overall, the box office took in $120 million, down from $154 million for the comparable weekend a year ago. Comparisons, however, are dicey, given this weekend's competition from the opening of the Olympic Games in China.

The top ten films for the weekend, according to studio estimates compiled by Media by Numbers:1. The Dark Knight, $26 million; 2. Pineapple Express, $22.4 million; 3. The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, $16.1 million; 4. The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2, $10.8 million; 5. Step Brothers, $8.9 million; 6. Mamma Mia!, $8.1 million; 7. Journey to the Center of the Earth, $4.9 million; 8. Hancock, $3.3 million; 9. Swing Vote, $3.1 million; 10. Wall-e, $3 million.

'Dark Knight' spends a month at No.1

11 August 2008 2:04 AM, PDT | From Digitalspy | See recent digitalspy news

The Dark Knight has maintained its grip on the Us box office chart, spending a fourth consecutive week at number one. The superhero film's $$26 million gross edged out new entry Pineapple Express, which debuted to a solid $$22.4 million, to take pole position at the weekend box office. The other new wide release, Warner Bros' The Sisterhood Of The Traveling Pants 2, landed at number four with $$10.7 million. The Dark Knight is the first film since 2003's The Lord Of The Rings: The Return Of The King to hold the number one spot for a month. Christopher Nolan's sequel is now in third place on the (more)

"The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2" web reviews

8 August 2008 9:24 PM, PDT | From screeninglog.com | See recent screeninglog news

Although I'm a guy and I'm 24, I have to admit I enjoyed Sanaa Hamri' "The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2" almost as much as I enjoyed its predecessor. And no, not only because of Blake Lively. Anyway, feel free to check out my review right here. Now let's quickly take a look at what other Web critics have to say about the film, which follows Lively, America Ferrera, Alexis Bledel and Amber Tamblyn as four friends who embark on their first year of college and the summer beyond.

• Katey Rich at CinemaBlend: "Blessed with four talented actresses returning for the sequel, as well as a fiercely loyal fanbase, the movie didn't have to do much to satisfy its audience. If it had only tried a little harder, though, it could have been something worth recommending."

• Collider's Brian Orndorf: "It's a candy-coated drama coasting on a once perceptible charm

Seen on: August 7, 2008

The players: Director: Sanaa Hamri, Writer: Elizabeth Chandler, Cast: America Ferrera, Amber Tamblyn, Alexis Bledel, Blake Lively, Jesse Williams

Facts of interest: Chandler also collaborated on the script for the first film.

The plot: "The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2" follows four best friends as their embark on the first year of college and the summer beyond.

Our quick thoughts: In 2005’s “The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants,” four best girlfriends spent a summer apart but decided to stay connected by sharing a pair of old jeans that fit each one of them perfectly. Based on the acclaimed novel by Ann Brashares, the big-screen adaptation took four interesting characters and had them face several issues that eventually strengthened their bond and taught them a few valuable lessons about life and love.

Lively's Clumsy On-set Experience

7 August 2008 6:30 PM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Clumsy Blake Lively caused all sorts of problems on the set of movie sequel The Sisterhood Of The Traveling Pants 2 - by crashing a moped and stepping on a sea urchin.

The actress was shooting the film in Santorini, Greece and admits her slip-ups and injuries became a running joke among the cast and crew.

She recalls, "I crashed a moped on the first day of shooting into (co-star) America (Ferrera) and into an ancient stone wall.

"I also jumped off a cliff and while I was crawling out (of the sea) - while I had a gimp knee - I stepped on a sea urchin and got, like, 42 sea urchin needles lodged in my foot."

Lively recalls castmate Amber Tamblyn had a strange way of helping her pal deal with the pain: "Because I was in so much pain and they didn't have any pain medication there, she was hitting me in the head while the doctor was taking them out.

"She was like, 'That's what they do to dogs.'"

The Sisterhood Of The Traveling Pants 2

7 August 2008 3:33 PM, PDT | From avclub.com | See recent The AV Club news

For those just tuning in, The Sisterhood Of The Traveling Pants is a popular young-adult book series written by Ann Brashares about four friends who bond over a pair of jeans that magically fits all of them. Being part of the sisterhood involves rotating the pants to the next person in line on a weekly basis each summer. But apart from their pliability, the pants don't seem that magical. In 2005's The Sisterhood Of The Traveling Pants and this sequel (largely taken from the series' fourth book), they essentially play the same role as Dumbo's feather, instilling confidence in girls navigating a world that isn't exactly designed to build them up. As before, Pants 2 is essentially four films in one, each starring one of the leads. And for viewers who have already learned the obvious lessons—believing in themselves, following their hearts, etc. etc.—the stories have limited interest. Video.

Movie Review - 'The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2'

6 August 2008 2:02 PM, PDT | From GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news

The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2

Starring Alexis Bledel, America Ferrera, Blake Lively, and Amber Tamblyn

Directed by Sanaa Hamri

Rated PG-13

For what it set out to accomplish, the first Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants was a good movie. The Godfather has nothing to worry about, of course, but as a film aimed at girls in their awkward teenage years, Sisterhood had a lot of good qualities. Certainly, it had more really good qualities than mediocre ones.

The stories seemed relevant to that audience and believable to those who may not be in the target demographic, the friendships had their ups and downs, and the performances – particularly by America Ferrera – were authentic and noteworthy.

In 2005, the film was something of a showcase for stars of a pair of TV series that enjoyed a big youth following, Amber Tamblyn from Joan of Arcadia and Alexis Bledel of Gilmore Girls.

Movie Reviews: The Sisterhood Of The Traveling Pants 2

6 August 2008 10:37 AM, PDT | From Studio Briefing | See recent Studio Briefing news

The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2 , a chronicle about magical jeans, returns for a second trip -- a chick flick to compete with all the fanboy, druggie, and monster stuff out there for males. "Watching the sequel is like stumbling on a pair of jeans and realizing they still fit comfortably," writes Claudia Puig in USA Today. Stephen Holden in the New York Times compares the movie to "being patted on the shoulder by an encouraging high school guidance counselor and assured that you are doing just fine." Jessica Reaves writes that the movie is both a pleasure and a relief as "it presents its heroines' relationships as complicated, challenging and particularly rewarding, and not simply as a vehicle for finding the perfect boyfriend." On the other hand, Glenn Whipp concludes in the Los Angeles Daily News, "Pants is less interested in sisterhood and navigating young adulthood than it is in selling glossy girl fantasies of exotic locales and bodacious boyfriends."

Theaters Dodge Olympics

6 August 2008 10:37 AM, PDT | From Studio Briefing | See recent Studio Briefing news

Aware of the competition from Friday's scheduled telecast of the opening ceremonies of the Olympic Games, Sony and Warner Bros. have decided to move their latest releases into theaters today (Wednesday). (China reportedly is spending $300 million on the show, more than the budget of any Hollywood film ever produced.) While one of the films, Pineapple Express, is expected to give The Dark Knight a run for the money in its fourth weekend, analysts point out that by opening the film on Wednesday, Sony risks depleting its weekend audience, particularly if the film receives poor word-of-mouth. The other film, Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2, is expected to perform decently but is not regarded as serious competition for either Dark Knight or Pineapple Express.

You could call "The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2" a "Sex and the City" for 'tweens, but truthfully the former is a much better movie, albeit far less raunchy.

In the three years since the first "Traveling Pants" was adapted from one of Anne Brashears' novels, two of its little-known ensemble of four have become TV stars - America Ferrara on "Ugly Betty" and Blake Lively on "Gossip Girl."

Surprisingly, they're not rewarded with the juiciest of the four intersecting story lines drawn from three other Brashears novels.

Opening This Week: Diy art, Philip Roth, the Germs and motorcycle gangs

This week's delectable delights include, amongst other things, such highbrow morsels as a gallery retrospective on D.I.Y. art and a crash course in the history of the California vineyards. If that's not your cup of proverbial tea, there's always psychotic bikers and the ballad of two stoned losers on the run from gangsters and the police.

More than 15 years after founding the hugely influential Alleged Gallery in New York, the freelance curator Aaron Rose continues to serve as a cornerstone of the now-global D.I.Y. art scene. Here he teams with "Blair Witch" actor-turned-director Joshua Leonard to chart the evolution and subsequent commercialization of a movement whose genesis was found in a group of outcasts, slackers and misfits from the fringes of subculture. If you've missed the girls from "The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants," don't worry, they'll be back with a brand-new adventure this Wednesday. Directed by Sanaa Hamri (who replaces Ken Kwapis), "The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2" follows Lena (Alexis Bledel), Carmen (America Ferrera), Bridget (Blake Lively) and Tibby (Amber Tamblyn) as they tell each other all about their experiences during the first year of college and the following summer.

Warner Bros. recently released 11 clips from the flick, and you can check out all of them just below.
