Holiday Movie Guide: The December Movies to Check Out (Part 2/2)

26 November 2009 5:17 PM, PST | Aceshowbiz | See recent Aceshowbiz news »

Continuing the 2009 holiday movies list, here AceShowbiz

presents the second part of the two-part holiday movie guide. Similar to

Part I, it offers

two categories of movies. This time around, the remaining feature films

coming out in December 2009 are divided into "Pure Entertainment" and

"Limited Releases".

The majority of the films compiled in the "Pure Entertainment" can be

enjoyed with the family. In fact, some of them are designed for kids to

enjoy. The "Limited Releases", in the meantime, lists charming movies

which will be screened in limited theaters across the U.S. this holiday

season. Among Part II's selection are side-splitting "It's

Complicated" and heart-touching "Hachiko: A Dog's Story".

Pure Entertainment

"The Princess and the Frog"

Release Date: December 11

Been missing the old-fashioned, hand-drawn animation? Walt Disney Pictures

will delight you this holiday season with "The Princess and the Frog".

Rodents have always been the animal of choice for animation studios. This time the rodent-roulette has landed on guinea pigs...and secret-agent ones at that. Rodents have always been the animal of choice for animation studios. This is no surprise as the most famous cartoon character in the world is, of course, a mouse. A fixation that began with Mickey Mouse in 1928 resurfaced in the late nineties with the emergence of CGI in the Stuart Little series and, more recently, Ratatouille, Alvin and the Chipmunks and, the less commercially-successful, The Tale of Desperaux. »

The Twilight Saga: New Moon is breaking more records

26 November 2009 8:36 AM, PST | The Scorecard Review | See recent Scorecard Review news »

Not many film critics have put a positive spin on the blockbuster The Twilight Saga: New Moon starring Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner.

We have one critic who really like it, the other … not so much.

McLaughlin’s Tsr – 8/10

Allen’s Tsr – 4/10

He Said – She Said … The Twilight Saga: New Moon

New Moon already beat one box office record, making $72.7 million on it’s opening Friday, besting Dark Knight. And now there is another record it can claim. This one of the online variety.

According to Visible Measures, the New Moon internet spot drew 32.6 million views since last Wednesday, up 63 percent from the previous frame. That was tops with Avatar and Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakuel coming in second and third.

The heavy traffic for New Moon is not shocking with it making $142.8 million over three days. My theory still hasn’t been disproved …

Paramore's Hayley Williams Weighs In On Ufc 106, 'The Blind Side'

23 November 2009 10:02 AM, PST | MTV Newsroom | See recent MTV Newsroom news »

Last week, we checked in on Hayley Williams while she enjoys her down time before Paramore heads to Europe to rock their way through the continent as they continue their tour for Brand New Eyes. In a series of tweets, she plugged video game "Left 4 Dead 2," the spooky sci-fi flick "The Fourth Kind" and the holiday stage production "How the Grinch Stole Christmas," among other cultural things that she indulged in during her period of rest.

Over the weekend, she jumped into another series entertainment treats that she weighed in on via her increasingly excellent Twitter. On Saturday night (November 21), her evening was taken up by Ufc 106, which saw Tito Ortiz make his return to the Octagon to take on former light heavyweight champion Forrest Griffin. "Ufc 106. I must say Forrest Griffin almost won me over with his walk out music," she tweeted (Griffin, as good-natured a fighter as there is in Ufc, »

One last thing… David Cross

20 November 2009 4:07 PM, PST | The Guardian - TV News | See recent The Guardian - TV News news »

Baldy Us comedian David Cross on aliens, chipmunks, upsetting the President and molesting the Pope

Hello, David. You grew up in Roswell, Georgia, which is presumably the same place as Roswell, New Mexico (1). Did you ever notice anything fishy/alien?

The aliens in New Mexico were from space whereas I was a poor fatherless Jew in a Baptist area of Georgia. That made me the alien.

You recently got into trouble for snorting coke 40 feet away from the President at some sort of Presidential dinner. What's next? Shooting up heroin 10cm away from the Pope?

A controlled substance is a controlled substance whether it's cocaine or heroin. That isn't really upping the stakes. I'd like to molest the Pope to the point he enjoys it so much he doesn't even file a complaint.

You're 45 and dating very attractive 26-year-old Hollywood actress Amber Tamblyn (2) (3). Do you give hope to baldies everywhere? »

‘New Moon’ Director Says He May Retire

19 November 2009 9:22 AM, PST | newsinfilm.com | See recent newsinfilm news »

After The Twilight Saga: New Moon, the fifth film of his directing career, Chris Weitz may be retiring from filmmaking entirely.

In an interview with MovieMaker, Weitz expressed frustration with the heavy studio (New Line) influence while making The Golden Compass, a CGI-heavy epic that ultimately bombed at the domestic box office amidst religious controversy.  He confirms the “edit was taken from [him]” and his chances of making it his “masterpiece” were ruined by meddling executives.

The Golden Compass was going to be his masterpiece?  Maybe it is time to hang it up…

New Moon won’t be his last, though.  He’s eying a script by Eric Essen called “The Gardener” next.  I guess that means he won’t be taking the helm of Breaking Dawn, as rumors have suggested.  Here’s Weitz describing potentially his last film:

“It’s sort of an homage to The Bicycle Thief.  The intention »

Jason Lee Directs Get Back

18 November 2009 12:54 PM, PST | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

A lot of comedy actors are pretty dispensible,  even if they are highly paid, but there was nobody better suited than Jason Lee to play Earl Hickey in My Name is Earl, at least when he dons the moustache. With the cancellation of the series, Lee is working on several new projects, including Get Back, his directorial debut.  THR says that it “tells the story of two music-obsessed friends who time travel back to 1966 London, where one gets caught in a love triangle with John Lennon and Yoko Ono”. That should be ripe for comedic material, but is it still relevant? Lee is quite the busy man. While Alvin and the Chipmunks will soon be released, he has also finished shooting Kevin Smith’s A Couple of Dicks and George Gallo’s Columbus Circle. In the planning stages are an adult swim live-action comedy show and Delta Blues, a TNT »

Jason Lee to Sing the Delta Blues

17 November 2009 7:17 PM, PST | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Jason Lee, who starred for four seasons in the critically acclaimed comedy My Name Is Earl, has been cast in the lead role of the TNT pilot Delta Blues. He will play Dwight Hendricks, a Memphis police officer who lives with his mother and moonlights as an Elvis impersonator.

The pilot for Delta Blues, which comes to TNT from George Clooney and Grant Heslov's Smokehouse Pictures and Warner Horizon Television, will be directed by Emmy nominee Clark Johnson (The Shield) from a script by Liz M. Garcia (Cold Case) and actor Joshua Harto (The Dark Knight). Clooney, Heslov and Garcia serve as executive producers. Henry Bronchtein (The Sopranos) and Smokehouse's Abby Wolf-Weiss are co-executive producers, and Harto is a producer. Johnson will also receive an executive-producer credit for the pilot.

"Jason Lee is the ideal choice to bring the compelling, off-kilter Dwight Hendricks to life," said Michael Wright, executive vice president, »

Alvin and the Chipmunks 2 Trailer #2

The second trailer for the upcoming “Alvin and the Chipmunks 2: The Squeakquel” has appeared online, featuring lots of footage from the new movie.

Now in the care of Dave Seville’s nephew (Zachary Levi), Alvin, Simon and Theodore take a break from pop-music stardom and return to school. Almost immediately, the tiny tunesmiths are given the giant task of saving their school’s music program by winning a battle of the band’s contest. Though the boys think winning the contest will be easy, romantic and musical sparks fly when they meet Brittany, Eleanor and Jeannette — also known as The Chipettes.

Betty Thomas (Doctor Dolittle, John Tucker Must Die) is directing “Alvin and The Chipmunks: The Squeakuel”. Starring Jason Lee, and the altered voices of Justin Long, Matthew Gray Gubler, Jesse McCartney, Anna Faris, Christina Applegate and Amy Poehler.

Dwayne Johnson, Jessica Biel and Justin Long Interview, Planet 51

16 November 2009 8:00 PM, PST | MoviesOnline.ca | See recent MoviesOnline news »

MoviesOnline sat down recently with Dwayne Johnson, Jessica Biel and Justin Long to talk about their new film, “Planet 51,” a galactic-sized animated alien adventure comedy.

When American astronaut Captain Charles "Chuck" Baker (Johnson) lands on Planet 51, he thinks he's the first person to step foot on it only to discover that this planet is inhabited by little green people who are happily living in a white picket fence world reminiscent of a cheerfully innocent 1950s America, and whose only fear is that it will be overrun by alien invaders...like Chuck! With the help of his robot companion "Rover" and his new friend Lem (Long), Chuck must navigate his way through the dazzling, but bewildering, landscape of Planet 51 in order to escape becoming a permanent part of the Planet 51 Alien Invaders Space Museum.

Dwayne Johnson, Jessica Biel and Justin Long are fabulous people and we really appreciated their time. »

Jessica Biel, Justin Long, and Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson Interview Planet 51

15 November 2009 1:31 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Last week, Sony held a press junket at the Griffith Observatory, here in Los Angeles, to help promote their upcoming animated movie Planet 51.  Since the film takes place on another planet, I think the location was perfect.  Also, almost every press day is held at a hotel, and it’s great to “shake and bake” the junket format.   But while the location was different, that didn’t stop Jessica Biel, Justin Long, and Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson from making all the journalists laugh during most of their press conference.  While you may be sick of Justin Long and his Mac commercials, the guy is quick on his feet when reacting to questions.  I was very impressed.

Anyway, after the jump to can either read the transcript of the press conference or listen to the audio.  While I always think listening to the audio is better than reading a trancript, »

Oscar Receives 20 Hopefuls For Animated Film Category

12 November 2009 12:11 AM, PST | icelebz.com | See recent iCelebz news »

A whopping 20 films have been submitted for consideration in the Animated Feature Film category for the 82nd Academy Awards. The features will be cut to five for the final shortlist.

Under the Academy's rules for the category, a maximum of 5 films can be nominated in a year if the eligible entries reach at least 16.

However, not all of the 20 hopefuls have completed their Los Angeles qualifying run yet. "Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squekquel," "The Dolphin - Story of a Dreamer," "Fantastic Mr. Fox," "Planet 51," "The Princess and the Frog," "The Secret of Kells," and "A Town Called Panic" must still fulfill the theatrical release requirements and meet all of the category's qualifying rules before they can be assured of their position in the list.

The films hoping for the Animated Feature Film category may also qualify for the other categories if they meet the requirements.

'Up' Leads List of 20 Potential Animated Nominees

11 November 2009 11:56 AM, PST | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

Here's the list of the 20 films that have already been submitted for the Best Animated Feature category at the Academy Awards. Now, with Up a very likely Best Picture nominee, that kind of undercuts this category. We've mentioned this before: If Up is in the running for Best Picture and, say, Ponyo wins Best Animated, then why isn't Ponyo in the Best Picture race?

That's not to demean the other movies but if you're looking at it logically, if Up isn't inherently better than everything else in the animated division, then those movies should be up for Best Picture instead, and I think it's safe to say that won't happen.

Not everything that might wind up in the field of nominees has had its qualifying Academy run, according to Variety, films like Alvin and the Chipmunks and The Princess and the Frog. But it does clear the way for five nominees, »

The Good, The Bad And The Wtf: Clashing News, Wolves and All

10 November 2009 6:57 PM, PST | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

Things to know about at this week: the first Clash of the Titans teaser, Steve Guttenberg still hanging onto his 80's glory, toy movies are still wanted, and the fantastic piece of news that is the death of the Oldboy remake. What's that? That's right. Read along.

The Good

• A very good poster for Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland was posted on the Mad Hatter's official Facebook page. Two more are coming, presumably on the Red Queen and White Queen pages.

• A selection of props from Duncan Jones' Moon are up for auction on eBay, including Gerty himself! It's the actual full-size thing, measuring 83” x 33” x 27.5" and even signed by the director himself. As of writing it's still bidding at £1,000, so totally affordable if you're a collector.

• After being impressed by the new trailer for The Wolfman that was released a couple of weeks back, now I'm even more impressed by the posters. »

We want to bring you more news every day, but unfortunately our robot army of writers who never need to sleep, to eat, or to love, is still under development (currently all they do is sleep, eat, and love).  In the meantime, we’re going to be making “A Fistful of News” a regular feature you’ll see every other day where we bring you some additional news stories we found but didn’t have time to write.  Until the Robot Army is ready to proceed (which is unlikely as we cut corners and ordered them from Belize, a country not known for quality robotics).

After the jump you’ll find ten quick news items including what’s next for Up director Peter Docter even though it’s not Monsters, Inc. 2, Guillermo del Toro’s monster cameo in The Hobbit, and Jeff Bridges’ behind-the-scenes photography on the set of Iron Man. »
