Barry Sonnenfield to Direct and Exec. Produce Funny In Farsi for ABC

17 hours ago | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Producer-Director Barry Sonnenfeld (Pushing Daisies) is set to direct and executive produce the pilot of Funny in Farsi.  The single-camera comedy is being developed for ABC about growing up Iranian American in 1970s Newport Beach, based on Firoozeh Dumas’ memoir of the same name.

According to THR, ABC ordered a pilot script last season, but the director they had in mind pulled out and the project got shelved.  The pilot has been adapted from the book by Jeffrey Hodes and Nastaran Dibai (who worked together on the three-camera According to Jim), and Sonnenfeld is helming the show in conjunction with another show, likely a drama, both in a deal with ABC.

Sci-Fi Viewership Down 17 Percent

29 November 2009 1:17 AM, PST | AirlockAlpha.com | See recent Airlock Alpha news »

We remember the kinds of shows that were out last season that didn't draw the viewers they expected. Programs like "Knight Rider" on NBC, "Pushing Daisies" on ABC, even "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles" on Fox. While those shows might be fading into distant memory by now, there was one positive about that fateful season: More viewers were turning out for genre shows in the first part of the 2008-09 season than they are now. An Airlock Alpha analysis of the two seasons through the end of November sweeps shows viewership among genre shows to be down nearly 17.1 percent. The drop is actually being led by returning shows, none of which are showing anywhere near a stable audience from the year before, let alone an increase. "Heroes" on NBC is the biggest surprise. That show is ... »

Eastwick | Cable Girl

23 November 2009 4:05 PM, PST | The Guardian - TV News | See recent The Guardian - TV News news »

Find Desperate Housewives a bit too highbrow? Try Eastwick – it's very simple, rather sweet, and the mountie from Due South plays the Devil

For the days when a walk down Wisteria Lane seems far too much like hard work, there is now the delightful New England town of Eastwick. This new comedy-drama from ABC (showing on the Sci Fi channel from tonight) makes Desperate Housewives look like the German epic Heimat. But as the pulverising madness that is Christmas, end-of-year tax returns, and more Christmas descends, I find myself grateful rather than dismayed that something of such sweet simplicity is to be found anywhere.

Doubtless you know the story, from either John Irving's original book or the 1987 film The Witches of Eastwick. Three bored, frustrated and/or lonely women (in the small-screen version, they're nurse and mother-of-five Kat; artist Roxie; and pathologically shy reporter Joanna) befriend each other. Then, »

What’s Next for "Ugly Betty" (Gay-wise)? And Would There be a "Glee" Without "Betty"?

20 November 2009 10:32 AM, PST | AfterElton.com | See recent AfterElton.com news »

Warning: The following article contains general plot spoilers about the upcoming season of Ugly Betty.

Last week, Ugly Betty aired “Backseat Betty,” a touching episode involving Betty’s 15-year-old nephew, Justin. Over the course of the episode, we saw the friendship that is developing between Justin and Marc, an out gay man. But at the end of the episode, Justin announced, to everyone’s surprise, “I’m not gay” – although it was written in a very open-ended way.

We were curious about the future of Justin, Marc, and Ugly Betty in general, so we asked Silvio Horta, the out gay man who is the creator and executive producer for the series, and executive producers Jon Kinnally, who is also an out gay man, and Tracy Poust, who wrote last week’s episode.

What exactly did it mean when Justin claimed he wasn’t gay after being named homecoming queen by his classmates? »

The CW is planning to adapt the Warren Ellis-penned comic book Global Frequency. Pushing Daisies scribe Scott Nimerfo has been tapped to write the pilot, reports Production Weekly. "I haven't been cleared to comment yet, so I can't really add anything to this. I've spoken briefly to Scott Nimerfro - by which I mean I threatened to have him stabbed, and he thanked me and told me a funny story about how he's had worse threats - and (more) »

'Global Frequency' back to TV?

18 November 2009 4:25 AM, PST | Comicmix.com | See recent Comicmix news »

Global Frequency, the DC/Wildstorm comic, might be back in play as a TV series.

You may remember that in 2005, Mark Burnett (producer of Survivor) and John Rogers (who would go on to write the comic Blue Beetle and create the show Leverage) created a pilot for the WB. The pilot wasn't picked up; however, it got leaked to the Interwebs and became the most watched pilot that never got picked up.

Now the industry magazine Production Weekly has just posted the following on Twitter: The CW will again try to adapt Warren Ellis' comic book "Global Frequency," this time Scott Nimerfro will script the pilot. Scott Nimerfro has written for Star Trek: Voyager, Tales From The Crypt, Perversions Of Science, The Outer Limits, Stargate: Atlantis, and Pushing Daisies, and was an associate producer on the X-Men movie.

As Dollhouse disappears from TV, what other hitmakers' shows have been axed?

10 November 2009 11:12 AM, PST | The Guardian - TV News | See recent The Guardian - TV News news »

Joss Whedon show has been taken off air – for now at least – and looks unlikely to be back for a third season

Usually we'd have an episode-by-episode review of Dollhouse up at this point in the week. But not today – because it's disappeared from both UK and Us the schedules.

The fact that the latest show from Joss Whedon - who has Buffy, Angel and, Firefly among his credits - is missing comes as a disappointment (if not a shock) to its most ardent fans. While Dollhouse will have the chance to finish its Us TV run in December, and presumably its UK run not long after, that still asks a lot of viewers.

Problems with the show came after Fox in the Us decided the audience figures weren't strong enough - it has been in a notoriously difficult Friday night slot - and so for the duration of November »

Sick Theatregoer Almost Ruins Breakfast At Tiffany's

6 November 2009 12:11 AM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Anna Friel almost forgot her lines during a recent performance in West End show Breakfast At Tiffany's - when a sick theatre-goer showered the stalls with vomit.

The Pushing Daisies star is currently appearing as Holly Golightly in the hit stage production of Audrey Hepburn's classic movie.

But one performance was almost ruined after a reveller threw up over the balcony - splattering audience members below.

Friel admits she was angry at first - until she realised what had happened.

She tells U.K. radio station Smooth, "I thought it was late-comers who shouldn't have been allowed in - but it turned out someone had vomited from the balcony over six people and they were being escorted out to be cleaned up.

"I carried on singing but almost lost my way as there was such a noise coming from the seats. I almost lost it but I'm proud I kept my concentration." »

The Redemption of 'Heroes'

2 November 2009 7:29 PM, PST | TVovermind.com | See recent TVovermind.com news »

Call Heroes the fast food of television: even through its very worst moments, it still manages to be greatly entertaining television. This label is most applicable to the second and third volumes (not seasons) of the series, which were mediocre at best, with only a few high points (puppetmaster Eric Doyle, for instance). However, I still tuned in every week — not because it was great television — but because I was entertained. Oh, and because there was always a hope that the show would get better, and that I would be vindicated in my dedication (and be automatically entitled to bragging rights when the show returned to its former glory).

While that's not quite the case yet, I have to say that Heroes is striving to move out of the fast food category of television and more toward the gourmet category. Volume four, "Fugitives," was the best volume of the series since "Genesis, »

My Big Bang theory: The Middle's Brick is another Sheldon

31 October 2009 8:00 AM, PDT | AOL - TVSquad | See recent AOL - TVSquad news »

Like a stray dog that works his way into your heart, I think I've fallen in love with The Middle. I didn't want to get so attached, because -- quite frankly -- ABC's track record for sticking with quality shows isn't so great. I'm still mourning Pushing Daisies. But The Middle is nothing like Pushing Daisies, nor does it fall into the quirky, clever mode of other shows that ABC has been promulgating for years. Ugly Betty is quirky. Better off Ted is quirky. Dirty Sexy Money was quirky. Quirky's the word.

Men in Black 3 Script in the Works by Tropic Thunder Writer Etan Cohen

29 October 2009 9:18 PM, PDT | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

We learned that Columbia was finally moving forward with a third Men in Black movie back in April, but at the time there was no script attached to the project. While there still isn't much to report yet, we have learned that they've tapped the now-hot writer Etan Cohen (Tropic Thunder, Idiocracy) for the screenplay. There's no word yet on Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones' involvement, but I can't imagine they would bring the franchise back without featuring them in some capacity. I'm also hoping that they're able to bring Barry Sonnenfeld back to direct. He's been working on the television end of things recently (we can thank him for Pushing Daisies gloriously candy-colored style), and I'm sure he'd like to get another feature under his belt to distance himself from the Robin Williams fiasco Rv. The studio is mum on what MiB3 may actually be about, but »

Friel Enjoys Nude Scenes

28 October 2009 9:06 AM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Actress Anna Friel has no qualms about appearing naked onstage for her latest role - she loves stripping off.

The former Pushing Daisies star disrobes for a scene in the theatre version of 1961 movie Breakfast At Tiffany's in London's West End.

Her racy role as Holly Golightly has caused a stir in the U.K., with show bosses issuing a ban on audience members taking photos of the star nude.

But Friel admits she is not shy about peeling off her clothes - and would happily conduct press interviews naked.

She tells British TV host Paul O'Grady, "At first I was (nervous). There was a whole debate about when we actually rehearse the nakedness for the first time. It was in a rehearsal room which was very stark and cold and under fluorescent lights.

"I have never really had a problem with nakedness. I could sit here completely naked and be interviewed and not care. But I won't be doing that, don't worry!

"It's so brief and it's not gratuitous, it's not salacious. It's about this guy who sees a naked woman for the very first time. It teaches him to be a bit more open about it and not so stuffy. We've all got them - they just look different!" »

Friel Got To Grips With Guitar For West End Stage

Actress Anna Friel has a flair for music - she learned how to play the guitar in just five weeks.

The former Pushing Daisies star is currently impressing theatregoers in London's West End with her turn as Holly Golightly in the stage version of Audrey Hepburn's 1961 classic Breakfast At Tiffany's.

The role requires her to strum a guitar on-stage - and talented Friel easily got to grips with the instrument.

She says, "I had to learn (guitar) for this. We did five weeks rehearsals, I practised every day. My dad's a great guitarist, and my brother, so I've got that in my blood I think." »
