Brave actress Christina Applegate has been praised by her Samantha Who? co-star Jean Smart - because she returned to the set just weeks after winning her battle against breast cancer earlier this year.

Applegate went back to work last week (beg15Sep08) after undergoing a double mastectomy in a bid to beat the disease following her diagnosis in July.

Smart embraced the actress before she took to the stage at Sunday's 60th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards, where she was honoured in the category of Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series.

Seizing the moment to hail the star, Smart said: "The answer to the question Samantha Who? is Christina Applegate - I love you. I adore her and she sets the tone for the most amazing, brilliant hilarious cast in the world."

Smart added backstage: "I've never seen an actress who's so beloved by her cast and crew. I feel very protective of her. But she's a very spiritual person and she got through (cancer)."

Tina Fey stole the show at the 60th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards, receiving top honours on Sunday's event for her hit U.S. comedy series 30 Rock.

The series - starring creator Fey, Alec Baldwin and Tracy Morgan - won the Outstanding Comedy Series award, while TV series Mad Men claimed its own top honour for Outstanding Drama Series.

Fey and Baldwin each took home top honours of Outstanding Lead Actress and Actor in a Comedy Series for their roles on the show.

Fey took the stage, musing of her honours: "I thank my parents for somehow raising me to have confidence that is disproportionate with my looks and abilities. Well done. That is what all parents should do."

Historical series John Adams - executive produced by Tom Hanks - was the most-nominated show of the year, taking in five awards of its record 23 nods, including a win for Outstanding Miniseries.

Actress Glenn Close also claimed victory, picking up an honour for her lead role on dramatic series Damages.

Close paid tribute to actresses in her category: "We're proving that complicated, powerful, mature women are sexy and are high entertainment and can carry a show. I call us the sisterhood of the TV drama divas."

Best Reality-TV Competition program went to Amazing Race, the show's sixth award.

Elsewhere, the spectacular ceremony was marked by a performance from American singer/songwriter Josh Groban, joined briefly on stage by Ed McMahon during a musical salute to television history. Groban took to the stage, singing a medley of songs inspired by TV themes including songs from South Park and Gilligan's Island.

This year's show - opened by talk show queen Oprah Winfrey - was hosted by reality-tv stars American Idol's Ryan Seacrest, Project Runway's Heidi Klum, Dancing with the Stars' Tom Bergeron, Deal or No Deal's Howie Mandel and Survivor's Jeff Probst.

Actress Christina Applegate has returned to work just weeks after undergoing a double mastectomy in a bid to beat breast cancer.

The 36-year-old star had both breasts removed after being diagnosed with cancer in July.

And Applegate - who was given the all-clear following the operation - has returned to the set of comedy TV series Samantha Who?.

A spokesman for the star confirms to People.com that Applegate resumed filming on Monday and is still slated to present at the Primetime Emmy Awards on 21 September.

Actress Christina Applegate will continue shooting her U.S. TV series Samantha Who? as she undergoes reconstructive breast surgery following a double mastectomy.

The 36-year-old star revealed on Tuesday she had both breasts removed after being diagnosed with cancer last month.

Applegate - who was given the all-clear following the operation - is now scheduled to undergo reconstructive surgery over the next eight months.

A spokesperson for the star insists she will be "on a normal shooting schedule", adding that the procedure "is not affecting production".

The actress had already completed filming five episodes for the upcoming season of her hit comedy show before stopping for a summer break at the end of June.

An ABC spokesperson confirms: "They're on a scheduled hiatus and she'll be back next month. It's business as usual."

Latest: Actress Christina Applegate has revealed the details of her treatment after successfully battling breast cancer.

The 36-year-old star had both breasts removed following her diagnosis with the deadly illness last month - leaving her "clear" of any tumours.

After testing positive for the breast cancer gene, Applegate opted for the drastic surgery to significantly reduce the risk of the disease returning.

It also means she does not need radiation or chemotherapy treatment.

She tells U.S. breakfast show Good Morning America, "My decision - after looking at all the treatment plans that were possibilities for me - the only one that seemed the most logical, and the one that was going to work for me, was to have a bilateral mastectomy.

"So basically I had prophylactic, double mastectomies, people would say - three weeks ago.

"I didn't want to go back to the doctors every four months for testing, and squishing and everything, I just wanted to kind of be rid of this whole thing - for me. And so this was the choice that I made, and it was a tough one."

The Samantha Who? star is now scheduled to undergo reconstructive surgery to repair her breast tissue over the next eight months.

But Applegate, whose mother is a two-time breast cancer survivor, remains in good spirits - despite having to go back under the knife.

She jokes: "You know, I'm going to have cute boobs when I'm 90 so you know, there's that. I'm going to have the best boobs in the nursing home, I'm telling you. I'm going to be the envy of all the ladies around the bridge table."

Christina Applegate is undergoing treatment for breast cancer, a spokesperson for the actress has announced.

The 36-year-old Anchorman star is expected to make a full recovery after being diagnosed with cancer during a regular MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scan, representative Ame Van Iden confirmed in a statement released to the media on Saturday.

The full statement reads: "Christina Applegate was diagnosed with an early form of breast cancer. Benefiting from early detection through a doctor ordered Mri, the cancer is not life threatening.

"Christina is following the recommended treatment of her doctors and will have a full recovery. No further statement will be issued at this time."

It was announced last month the star would participate in the U.S. TV telethon Stand Up To Cancer on 5 September, joining Meryl Streep, Sally Field, Jennifer Aniston and Scarlett Johansson in raising money for cancer research.

Applegate is also set to compete in next month's Emmy Awards, after receiving a nomination for Best Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for her role in hit TV show Samantha Who?

American Idol host Ryan Seacrest and supermodel Heidi Klum have picked up their first Emmy nominations, after the 2008 Primetime TV Awards introduced the category of top host for a reality competition show.

The presenters will go up against Dancing With the Stars' Tom Bergeron, as well as Deal or No Deal's Howie Mandel and Survivor's Jeff Probst to take home the first honour.

Mad Men picked up 16 nods, the most nominations of any drama series, including Best Dramatic Series and Best Actor for its lead, Jon Hamm.

Hamm will face actors Hugh Laurie, for House; Michael C. Hall, for Dexter; Gabriel Byrne, for In Treatment; Bryan Cranston, for Breaking Bad; and James Spader, for Boston Legal.

Meanwhile, 30 Rock was the frontrunner in the comedy category, with 17 nominations, including best series - a gong the show took home last year - and leading actor, Alec Baldwin, and actress for Tina Fey, the show's creator.

The winners for the 60th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards will be unveiled on 21 September at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles.

Actress Mary-Kate Olsen is to make a guest appearance on Christina Applegate's comedy series Samantha Who?

The star plays a "self-destructive bad girl" in her cameo, but her professionalism on set has been highly praised by the U.S. TV show's executive producer Don Todd.

He tells People.com, "She showed up alone, ready to work, is great on set and is serious about the job.

"This is a girl who's been in front of the camera almost literally her entire life. She's smart, and she knows what she's doing."
