Hal Holbrook, who did an exceptional performance in Into the Wild, has new movie entitled That Evening Sun. It was shown at the recent Swsx to much acclaim. The movie also stars, one of tMF's favorites and definitely a talent to watch, Mia Wasikowska.

I like to call a spade a spade; I like to say what I think. Anyway, there are educatedSoutherners and those who are not very educated for one reason or another. In this picture you see the two kinds of Southerners. So often, Hollywood portrays anybody from the South as some dumb hick who is racist. That's the favorite thing, you know - an uneducated hick. And I think that one of the things that Scott and Walton and Ray wanted to do in this film is to show a wider picture of Southern people. »

It's hard to figure Hollywood out sometimes. Last week we had nothing outside of the last minute addition, Wednesday release of the Michael Jackson doc This is It and then this week is packed, albeit with a lot of smaller stuff and a pair of thrillers, but any weekend where I am posting five reviews is a pretty big week for movie releases. Let's check 'em out shall we?
The Fourth Kind Is it real? No. Is it any good? It's not bad and will likely be better for people going in knowing wholeheartedly it is fake, but then again, the filmmaker's attempts to convince you it's real may grate on you even more under those circumstances. It's hard to figure which side the general public will come down on this one and user comments should prove entertaining reads.
This film is rated PG-13 for violent/disturbing images, some terror, »

Taking Woodstock Directed by Ang Lee I've never been able to sit through more than a few minutes of Michael Wadleigh's revered documentary Woodstock. Every time it's on TV, I hope I'm going to catch some footage of Crosby Stills and Nash or Jimi Hendrix. Invariably, what I get is a (split) screenful of hippies partying on down in acres of mud. So, I was intrigued by the idea of Ang Lee making a comedy based on Elliot Tiber's 2007 memoir about his role in this seismic late 60s cultural event. And surely it had to be more fun than the Taiwanese director's downbeat spy yarn, Lust, Caution. Greek-American comedian Demetri Martin plays Elliot, artist interior designer and dutiful son of Russian-Jewish émigrés Sonia and Jake Teichberg (Imelda Staunton and Henry Goodman). The family owns the El Monaco, a ramshackle motel in White Lake, New York, where Elliot's mum »

While Terrance Zdunich has worked behind the scene on everything from "The Starship Troopers Chronicles" to Into The Wild, he really became a phenomenon unto himself in the last two years, when his collaboration with director Darren Lynn Bousman, Repo: The Genetic Opera, made its slow but inevitable move to the silver screen. Not merely helping conceive and design the film but functioning as one of its primary performers - playing the mysterious, ubiquitous Graverobber - Zdunich proved himself a versatile artist whose canvas lies in more than one medium.
Since the release of Repo last year, Zdunich hasn't slowed down, even though the trek from its original stage show - which we put on as a one-man performance - to a feature film was arduous to say the very least. But with the army of Repo followers growing by the day, Zdunich recognized the value - if not the »

One tMF viewer, who is apparently a Megan Fox fan, once said 'Megan Fox is overrated as a celebrity but not as an actress.' That comment made me think: Is there really such a difference? Can't we judge someone who is a celebrity and an actress, and treat her as one and the same? She's just one person right?
- - -
- - - Here's exactly what our viewer said:
Megan Fox may be overrated as a "celebrity," but she is actually underrated, As An Actress.
She gets a ridiculously inordinate amount of criticism for her acting because the part of her career that made her famous was a part that focused on how attractive she was, not anything that could actually showcase any acting skills, »

The only big film festival in my own backyard is back and it runs from November 12th through the 22nd. While it caters more to heavy run fest material and arthouse film, they do have some of the more interesting films playing this year:
Ryan Ward's excellent Son of the Sunshine which is one of my favorite films of the year. (review)
The weird, lengthy comedy The Revenant (review)
Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans
The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus
and much more. Program after the break!

Earlier this week I was introduced to a small genre of film that I didn't know existed - Southern Gothic. If you're unsure of what exactly that means, like I was at first, just check out this trailer and you'll completely understand. Russ from SlashFilm recently pointed out this trailer for That Evening Sun that stars Hal Holbrook, Ray McKinnon, and Mia Wasikowska (who plays Alice in Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland). It looks like Hal Holbrook can still deliver an oustanding performance. I was moved by his work in Into the Wild and it looks like this will be great thanks to him as well. Anyway, I've said enough, just watch this. Watch the official trailer for Scott Teems' That Evening Sun: [flv:http://media2.firstshowing.net/firstshowing/thateveningsun-tlr_h480p.flv http://media2.firstshowing.net/firstshowing/thateveningsun-tlr_h480p.jpg 598 248] You can also watch the That Evening Sun trailer in High Definition on Apple An aging Tennessee farmer named Abner Meecham (Hal Holbrook) returns »

It’s very rarely that we don’t have the volume cranked up to 11 on the Boxwish jukebox. Yes, we love listening to all the latest seven-inch records on the hit parade here at Boxwish HQ, a special favourite being music from the movies. From the likes of Forrest Gump to Juno, Rocky to Into the Wild we can’t get enough of stonking cinematic soundtracks and also their more overlooked cousin, the film score. And so we pricked up our ears at news of the winners and shakers at this year’s World Soundtrack Awards which closed the 36th Ghent International Film Festival on Saturday. And coming out on top at the showbiz event was two-time Oscar nominee Alexandre Desplat, who took home the Film Composer of the Year 2009 gong as well as the prize for Best Original Film Score of the Year for his work on The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. »

2007 saw the release of Into the Wild, the movie based on Jon Krakauer's 1996 book chronicling Christopher McCandless' journey into the unknown. Marking Sean Penn's fourth directorial work, the soundtrack for the movie became Pearl Jam front man Eddie Vedder's first solo album. He wrote most of the songs appearing in the film while Michael Brook provided original music. Describing this soundtrack as "folky" is hardly a new discovery, but it is the first adjective that comes to mind after listening to the welling guitar sounds. At its worst the album reaches a monotonous quality only saved by Vedder's magnificent, touching interpretations. Although it was "Guaranteed" that won Vedder a Golden Globe for best original song and the celebratory, repetitive Indio cover "Hard Sun" was released as a single, it seems to be "Society", a Jerry Hannan -penned piece that stands at the emotional core of the movie. »

IFP's Gotham Independent Film Awards kicks off the awards season in November each year with an impressive list of nominees, and this year's list is no different. While it includes big names like the Coens for A Serious Man and buzzy films like The Hurt Locker and Big Fan, it also gives deserving nods to smaller films like Amreeka, a wonderful film about a mother and son from the West Bank who move the Illinois. The awards also include tributes to the careers of Natalie Portman, Stanley Tucci, and The Hurt Locker's director Kathryn Bigelow, as well as producers Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner, who both worked on A Serious Man, The Soloist, State of Play, and a slew of other projects.
Previous Gotham winners include Frozen River, Trouble the Water, Into the Wild, Sicko, and Half Nelson, just to name a few. Check out Cinematical's preview coverage of the awards here. »

Hal Holbrook has spent 55 years in movies and TV, and yet, he had to wait until he was nearly 82 to earn an Academy Award nomination. Though it's doubtful he'll break through for his second acting nomination in two years - following a supporting nod for his heartbreaking work in Sean Penn's Into the Wild - Holbrook is getting rave reviews for his work in That Evening Sun.
It isn't beyond comprehension that he could wind up in that category; Peter O'Toole made a charge with Venus a couple years ago...but he's Peter O'Toole. Last year, Richard Jenkins bucked the odds to wind up in that category, and there's little doubt That Evening Sun would need a similar kind of grass roots campaign to vault Holbrook into a category that will almost certainly containg Day-Lewis, Freeman, and/or Clooney.
But there is room among the five. Colin Firth is »
