Video - Anti-'Twilight' Trailer 'Inglourious Vampires'

18 hours ago | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

Perhaps it's better in theory than execution, but I give the makers of this spoofified mash-up of Inglorious Basterds and New Moon called - as you can plainly see - Inglourious Vampires.

Here's what I like about it: It's not often you get cultural subtext in your fan-made movie spoofs, but that's the best part of this. Movie fans who consider themselves more cultured or evolved have their noses pretty high in the air about the teenage vampire movies, and it's not a stretch to think that some of them may have drawn some sort of invisible line in a patch of invisible sand about the Twilight saga. It's really no different than The Notebook...only in a much more pervasive and Beatlemaniacal way.

You could get caught up in how so-so the production elements and acting are in Inglourious Vampires, but why? And yes, as the recruit says, Kristen Stewart »

Peter Liechti's The Sound of Insects -- Record of a Mummy was cited for "it's skillful exploration of minimalist means to create an extraordinary visual story between life and death". I'll would have made a call out for a screener copy, but I'll be catching the doc at Ridm Montreal next month - the trailer below basically demonstrates how you can do a lot with very little. That Evening Sun's Hal Holbrook: A Candid, Emotional Movieline Interview

19 November 2009 11:00 AM, PST | Movieline | See recent Movieline news »

It's time to move Hal Holbrook off the Oscar bubble and into the fold. The 84-year-old actor delivers arguably the performance of his career in That Evening Sun, director Scott Teems's terrific adaptation of the William Gay short story "I Hate to See That Evening Sun Go Down." Holbrook plays Abner Meecham, a Tennessean banished by his lawyer son (Walton Goggins) to a nursing home he'll soon flee in disgust. Returning to his farm, Abner discovers the Choate family -- led by ne'er-do-well patriarch Lonzo (Ray McKinnon) -- occupying the house he and his late wife built from scratch. When Abner decides to set up house in the tenant's quarters, the ensuing battle of wills between he and Lonzo zig-zags from comic to gothic to disturbingly violent -- thanks much to Holbrook's scenic route along the spectrum between righteousness and utter sociopathy. Imagine his celebrated character in Into the Wild »

Kristen Stewart looks beyond Bella

18 November 2009 | AfterEllen.com | See recent AfterEllen.com news »

I admit that the standing-in-line-for-days furor around New Moon mystifies me. I mean please, this is not The Final Ever Until Lucas Gets Another Idea Star Wars movie.

I also admit that I am old and a bit of a snob.

But last week, a young bisexual friend of mine put it in perspective for me with two words: Kristen Stewart.

My friend explained to me that while she certainly is a huge fan of the Twilight franchise, she would go see Kristen Stewart in anything. She just can’t take her eyes off of her. And it dawned on me: Stewart is my friend’s Meryl Streep. And judging by the responses of AfterEllen.com readers at any mention of Stewart, not to mention Hot 100 status, she’s not alone.

I have followed Kristen since Panic Room. She was able to make an impression even sharing the screen with Jodie Foster — no easy task. »

Interview: Hal Holbrook And That Evening Sun Director Scott Teems

17 November 2009 12:52 PM, PST | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Writer-director Scott Teems knew he'd written himself into a corner with That Evening Sun, an adaptation of William Gay's short story about an 80-something Southern man fighting to keep his house in the face of advanced age, surly renters and an indifferent son. Teems realized that there were very few elderly actors who could handle the role, much less the Southern accent, but he knew one guy who'd be perfect for it-- Hal Holbrook, the veteran actor recently Oscar nominated for Into the Wild, who knows a thing or two about remaining steadfast and stubborn into your 80s. In That Evening Sun, Holbrook plays Abner Meecham, a man who escapes from the retirement home to move back to his old farm, only to find that his son has rented out the place to another family, led by Lonzo Choat (Ray McKinnon), who hates Abner as much as Abner hates him. »

New Moon Round-Up: Kristen Stewart's 'Truth Machine,' Twilight House For Sale

16 November 2009 2:00 PM, PST | Movieline | See recent Movieline news »

About 79 hours remain before New Moon makes its midnight debut, which can only mean navigating a steady torrent of related news as the hype flood swirls around us. Find below a few of the more compelling subplots to consider as you prepare for zero-hour:

· Kristen Stewart isn't aloof, reports the Nyt -- she's just guarding herself against the horrors of abject teen stardom. To that end, says her Into the Wild director Sean Penn, she's a "truth machine" who admirably endures public scrutiny that would be "an obscenity on anybody's life." Stewart herself looks forward to the film's mall tour with the reassuring observation: "[T]hey could totally assassinate me at any time if they wanted. When so much energy is thrown at you, it has to throw you for a loop." Great. This may be the first time Kevlar is added to a tour rider. »

Kristen Stewart Says 'New Moon' Was 'Labor-Intensive'

Beverly Hills, California — Asking fans to name the best "Twilight Saga" actor inevitably results in a debate only slightly less passionate than the topic of whether "Breaking Dawn" was a worthy finale for the novels. No matter who your pick is, however, it's hard to deny that at the tender age of 19, Kristen Stewart has positioned herself to become a dominant Hollywood actress for decades to come.

With more than 20 movies under her belt, acclaim in such wide-ranging flicks as "Into the Wild," "Panic Room" and "Adventureland," and praise from the likes of Jodie Foster and Ryan Reynolds, KStew is undoubtedly an actress to watch.

But according to her, it was next week's "New Moon" that demanded some of the most difficult work yet in her young career. »

Southern Ethics:[p]That Evening Sun

10 November 2009 7:30 AM, PST | TribecaFilm.com | See recent Tribeca Film news »

With That Evening Sun, first time writer/director Scott Teems has adapted a modern Southern story (I Hate To See That Evening Sun Go Down, by Tennessee writer William Gay) into a elegiac, quiet film with heart, rugged authenticity, and a stubborn mule of a central character, portrayed by veteran actor Hal Holbrook. Holbrook's revelation of a performance in Sean Penn's Into the Wild two years ago (for which he received his first Oscar nomination at the age of 82 - the oldest actor ever nominated) caught Teems' eye; as he said, 'We knew we'd found our Abner.' Abner Meecham is an 80-year-old widower whose only son has moved him from his farm in West Tennessee into an assisted living facility several hours away. When Abner decides he's had enough of the place, he hitches back to the farm, only to find it (legally) occupied by the family of Lonzo Choat, »

This Weekend at the Movies: November 6, 2009

It's hard to figure Hollywood out sometimes. Last week we had nothing outside of the last minute addition, Wednesday release of the Michael Jackson doc This is It and then this week is packed, albeit with a lot of smaller stuff and a pair of thrillers, but any weekend where I am posting five reviews is a pretty big week for movie releases. Let's check 'em out shall we?

The Fourth Kind Is it real? No. Is it any good? It's not bad and will likely be better for people going in knowing wholeheartedly it is fake, but then again, the filmmaker's attempts to convince you it's real may grate on you even more under those circumstances. It's hard to figure which side the general public will come down on this one and user comments should prove entertaining reads.

This film is rated PG-13 for violent/disturbing images, some terror, »

London Film Festival 2009: Taking Woodstock

1 November 2009 7:08 PM, PST | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

Taking Woodstock Directed by Ang Lee I've never been able to sit through more than a few minutes of Michael Wadleigh's revered documentary Woodstock. Every time it's on TV, I hope I'm going to catch some footage of Crosby Stills and Nash or Jimi Hendrix. Invariably, what I get is a (split) screenful of hippies partying on down in acres of mud. So, I was intrigued by the idea of Ang Lee making a comedy based on Elliot Tiber's 2007 memoir about his role in this seismic late 60s cultural event. And surely it had to be more fun than the Taiwanese director's downbeat spy yarn, Lust, Caution. Greek-American comedian Demetri Martin plays Elliot, artist interior designer and dutiful son of Russian-Jewish émigrés Sonia and Jake Teichberg (Imelda Staunton and Henry Goodman). The family owns the El Monaco, a ramshackle motel in White Lake, New York, where Elliot's mum »

'Repo' Man Makes His Next Move With 'The Molting'

30 October 2009 4:05 PM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

While Terrance Zdunich has worked behind the scene on everything from "The Starship Troopers Chronicles" to Into The Wild, he really became a phenomenon unto himself in the last two years, when his collaboration with director Darren Lynn Bousman, Repo: The Genetic Opera, made its slow but inevitable move to the silver screen. Not merely helping conceive and design the film but functioning as one of its primary performers - playing the mysterious, ubiquitous Graverobber - Zdunich proved himself a versatile artist whose canvas lies in more than one medium.

Since the release of Repo last year, Zdunich hasn't slowed down, even though the trek from its original stage show - which we put on as a one-man performance - to a feature film was arduous to say the very least. But with the army of Repo followers growing by the day, Zdunich recognized the value - if not the »
