Will Smith's superhero movie Hancock has landed the top spot at the UK box office. It beat off competition from Jack Black's animated comedy Kung Fu Panda to claim the number one position. Prince Caspian falls two places to third, while Angelina Jolie's assassin movie Wanted slips to fourth. Elsewhere, Frank Darabont's Stephen King adaptation The Mist debuted at eight. Will Smith's superhero antics in Hancock has landed him at number one on the global box office chart.

The action film took $78.3 million (GBP39.15 million) over the weekend (04-06Jul08), leaving animated comedy Kung Fu Panda far behind in second place with $38 million (GBP19 million).

The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian is at number three with $24.3 million (GBP12.15 million), while former chart topper Wanted slips to number four with $18.8 million (GBP14.4 million) and Wall-E rounds out the top five with $13 million (GBP6.5 million).

Will Smith’s latest action hit “Hancock” dominated the international box office this weekend with a stunning $78.3 million in ticket sales in 50 territories, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Along with its five-day domestic gross of $107.3 million, Peter Berg’s film brought its worldwide total to $185.6 after just a few days in release. That’s not a bad result for Will Smith, who proved yet again he’s still a global box office hero.

DreamWorks Animation’s “Kung Fu Panda” delivered another strong weekend performance overseas with $38 million in a total of 44 markets. John Stevenson and Mark Osborne’s computer-animated family adventure lifted its international total to $151 million.

Meanwhile, “The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian” finished in third place with $24.3 million from ticket sales in 42 territories, reaching a total haul of $194 million. Although the film had a slow start domestically, the sequel to “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch

The Chronicles Of Narnia: Prince Caspian star Ben Barnes based his character on an unlikely source - controversial British royal Prince Harry.

The 26-year-old is the same age as Harry's elder brother Prince William, but admits that Caspian is more like the younger, more laid-back royal.

He says, "Caspian is not a swashbuckling heroic Prince Charming, but Americans expect somebody like that. Their concept of a Prince is Disney - that's all they know.

"But I've grown up with two princes, one my age, one my younger brother's age. Caspian makes mistakes; Harry goes to a party dressed as a Nazi. Caspian does something heroic; Harry goes and fights for his country without telling anyone.

"I think it's interesting that they are real people, making real decisions about their lives, but they have the responsibility that they may or may not want."

Prince Caspian has stormed to the top of the UK box office chart. The second movie in the Chronicles of Narnia franchise beat Angelina Jolie and James McAvoy's assassin film Wanted to the number one berth. The Chronicles Of Narnia: Prince Caspian has shot to the top of box office ratings, taking $8.12 million (GBP4.06 million) in its opening weekend.

The film, starring British newcomer Ben Barnes, ends The Incredible Hulk's two-week reign at the top. The all-action blockbuster dropped to third, taking in $1.31 million (GBP652,680).

Angelina Jolie and James McAvoy's new movie Wanted has opened in second place with $6.36 million (GBP3.18 million).

Adulthood kept steady at the number four spot, bringing in (GBP1.29 million) GBP649,112. The new top five is rounded out by Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull which took $1.25 million (GBP625,630).

While Timur Bekmambetov’s action hit “Wanted” failed to outperform Pixar’s “Wall-e” at the North American box office, the thriller starring James McAvoy and Angelina Jolie easily took the No. 1 spot overseas, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

“Wanted” opened in 22 markets this weekend, collecting an impressive $33 million. Its domestic rival “Wall-e” only debuted in six international markets, taking in $3.1 million. The computer-animated adventure will expand into more markets in the coming weeks and months.

DreamWorks Animation’s “Kung Fu Panda” finished second at the international box office this weekend with $21.5 million, brining its foreign total to $98.5 million. Following closely in third place was “The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian,” which opened in several new markets with a gross of 20.1 million.

The Chronicles Of Narnia: Prince Caspian star Ben Barnes is embarrassed about his newly found heart-throb status - insisting he doesn't feel comfortable when people view him as a sex symbol.

The 26-year-old shot to fame with the title role in the latest adaptation of C.S. Lewis' classic novels and he has seen his face adorning promotional posters the world over.

But Barnes insists that although he is grateful for the career boost, he is worried about becoming famous for his good looks and not his acting skills.

He says, "I find it all a bit embarrassing to be honest. All this heart-throb thing makes me look at my shoes. I don't really know how to respond to it. I suppose it's quite flattering in a way.

"But when I was shown the poster, I said to a producer in all earnestness, 'Is that sensible? Because you know no one knows who I am.'

"He said, 'The book's called Prince Caspian and we've got to put Prince Caspian on the poster. Sorry mate.' I was a bit worried actually."

Movie theaters across North America saw a lot of green inside and out over the weekend as The Incredible Hulk debuted with an estimated $54.5 million. It marked the second superhero movie from Marvel Entertainment to open at No. 1 at the box office in just over a month. Iron Man hauled in over $100 million in its debut on May 2. Although most critics agreed that the latest film version of the Marvel classic was an improvement over Ang Lee's Hulk five years ago, the new film actually earned less than its predecessor, which took in $62.1 million. Meanwhile, M. Night Shyamalan's The Happening, starring Mark Wahlberg, opened with a better-than-expected $30.5 million, according to Media by Numbers. M. Night Shyamalan’s new mystery thriller “The Happening” topped the international box office this weekend with an estimated $32 million in ticket sales from 88 territories, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Marvel’s “The Incredible Hulk” opened in only 38 markets but came in second with an impressive $31 million. If you add these figures to the domestic results, the picture looks a little different.

The worldwide total for “Hulk” is currently estimated at $85.5 million, while “The Happening” scored $62.5 million (click here for full North American box office report).

“Sex and the City” has been dominating the overseas box office for almost two weeks, but the New Line Cinema chick flick slipped to No. 3 this weekend with $23.3 million. “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” finished with a weekend gross of $18.5 million.

Other foreign results: “Kung Fu Panda” pulled in $14 million, while “The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian” earned $11.2 million.

Although DreamWorks Animation's Kung Fu Panda and Sony's You Don't Mess With the Zohan were expected to run neck-and-neck at the box office over the weekend, the results weren't even close. The panda did in fact mess with Zohan as it attracted an estimated $60 million in ticket sales to $40 million for Zohan. The figure for Panda was about twice what box-office prognosticators had predicted it would earn. The two films together, combined with solid holdover performances by Warner Bros.' Sex and the City and Paramount's Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull boosted the overall box office some 30 percent above the comparable weekend a years ago. You Don't Mess With the Zohan may be the title of Adam Sandler's latest comedy, but the message in the title is likely to be ignored by a fighting Kung Fu Panda, the DreamWorks Animation feature with Jack Black providing the voice of the title character. Analysts are expecting the match-up to be close and the box office for all movies this weekend to be solid -- what with holdovers Sex and the City, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, and other strong-legged features like The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian and Iron Man, continuing to vie for attention.

Even the box office estimates for the opening weekend of Warner Bros.' Sex and the City turned out to be too conservative as the film earned a million and a half dollars more on Sunday than studio executives had reckoned. When Friday's box-office results for Sex and the City came in on Saturday, Hollywood gurus were stunned. The movie had earned just about as much as Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull had earned the previous Friday, just under $30 million. While advance word was that the movie would do especially well on Friday as groups of women got together for the premiere, no one had predicted that it would do that well. But Warner Bros. distribution chief Dan Fellman told the Associated Press, "There were women that came in and bought out entire theaters in advance and invited all their friends." Co-star Sarah Jessica Parker told the New York Times, "It is kind of mind-boggling." (Eighty-five percent of the audience Friday night was female.) And in fact the movie took in only half its Friday gross on Saturday and again on Sunday, winding up with $55.7 million -- just about what it reportedly cost to produce. And yes, it became the top moneymaker at the box office for the weekend, pushing Indy into second place with $46 million -- also something that no one had predicted. Also opening solidly was the horror flick The Strangers, with about $20.7 million, to place third. Some experts are predicting that Crystal Skull will return to the top spot next week and remain there for a while, pointing out that the potential audience for that film is far greater than that for Sex and the City -- especially as kids begin pouring out of school for summer vacation.

Sex And The City: The Movie has stormed straight to the top of the U.S. box office, beating Indiana Jones into second place.

The big screen adaptation of the hit TV series took an impressive $55.7 million in it's opening weekend (30May-1Apr08), almost twice the amount studio bosses expected.

Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull took $46 million (GBP23 million) in its second week.

Another new entry, horror film The Strangers debuted at three with $20.7 million (GBP10.35 million); Iron Man took $14 million (GBP7 million) to seal fourth place. The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian, finished fifth with $13 million (GBP6.5 million).
