As we all know, Hollywood is the epicenter of not only fads, but also ripping off copying what works from other studios. We’ve all seen this before many times. One studio puts out a successful movie in some genre and within 6-9 months we see a bunch of movies coming out trying to capitalize on the popularity of the first one.
This phenomenon really took off in the early 1980s, with movies like Star Wars launching a new era in Sci-Fi films (yes, I know Star Wars was released prior to 1980), Superman starting the superhero movie trend, Friday the 13th and Nightmare on Elm Street giving us the wonderful teen horror genre (at least they were rated R back then). Rambo started the lone hero with enemies that were lousy shots and couldn’t kill him even with machine guns and Porky’s gave us the start of the raunchy high school comedy.

Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns is one of those fantasy movie concepts that never goes away. Everyone wants to see it, everyone wants to direct it, everyone wants to be in it, and yet it never actually gets made. I'm not sure exactly -- I don't think it's unfilmable, but it's kind of nightmarish. I don't know why, but I always want to scrub my brain after I read it. (When someone invents a method for doing just that, please let me know.)
Anyway, Geoff Boucher, who has the most enjoyable sit-down chats with geek gods, mentions that the last time he spoke to Miller, the writer/director/man about town said that he envisions Sylvester Stallone in the role. "Just that mouth of his, the scowl and the way it would look in a mask. I loved Rocky Balboa.

Today’s stars keep themselves in better shape than ever before, and audiences seem to like that. In fact, box office receipts for recent flicks featuring some of our favorite aging action heroes are so encouraging that studio execs are practically rubbing their hands together in anticipation of the new Harrison Ford (Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull) and Sylvester Stallone (Rambo) vehicles. Stallone certainly didn’t hurt himself when his more famous screen persona—Rocky Balboa—earned critical acclaim and a respectable $70 million in last year’s titular blockbuster, chasing doubts that the actor-director was simply giving himself a starring role in order to slow a career slide.

On February 16, 2007, Sylvester Stallone was busted in Australia with 48 vials of the human growth hormone Jintropin. To some, this was a non-story; after all, Stallone was not "cheating" in the same way a professional athlete might be if he were caught with the same performance-enhancing drugs. Stallone is an actor, and he's not competing against anyone. According to his lawyer, he was using Jintropin under medical supervision.
But Stallone is also the man who plays Rocky Balboa and John Rambo
