The Room – So Bad It’s Good (Kind Of)

7 September 2009 11:32 AM, PDT | FilmShaft.com | See recent FilmShaft.com news »

On Saturday I had one of the funniest nights of my entire life. I went to see a film called The Room at The Prince Charles Cinema in London’s West End. The Prince Charles will always be a special place for me and thousands of people in and around London. It happens to be one of the few remaining indie cinemas in the world and a damn great place to watch films. Any cinema that can name Quentin Tarantino as a fan must be doing something right.

Anyway back to this wonderful film that I went to see. I have always loved to watch films that fall in the category

…So bad it’s good…

I am a huge fan of the cult Canadian television show Mystery Science Theatre 3000, which is about a scientist that runs experiments on a human by subjecting him to really awful movies. The »

Video: Crowds Gather for the Worst Movie Ever

29 July 2009 10:00 AM, PDT | WorstPreviews.com | See recent Worst Previews news »

While watching Cartoon Network's Adult Swim one night, I was expecting for "King of the Hill" to be on, but instead was shown a B-movie that was of porn quality. There was terrible acting, a terrible plot, but I completely mesmerized and couldn't change the channel. At the time I actually thought it was something Adult Swim put together as a joke. Well, it was no joke. The movie is called "The Room" and is the brainchild of Tommy Wiseau, who wrote, directed, produced and starred in it. Apparently, he raised a few million dollars and made this movie back in 2003. For some reason, it became known as the "Citizen Kane of bad movies" and is now drawing enormous crowds of fans, including Alec Baldwin and David Cross, who want nothing more than to make fun of it. "It's not like there's one or two or three things that are bad about it. »

Are 'Repo!' and 'The Room' Really 'Rocky Horror' 2.0?

3 June 2009 6:02 PM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Since last September, at Fantastic Fest, it became immediately apparent that Repo! The Genetic Opera was due for a cult following, and a successful roadshow run last November and December seemed to confirm as much. I wasn't the biggest fan of Darren Lynn Bousman's goth-rock horror musical at the time, and don't exactly see myself giving it another look any time soon, but when its DVD release hasn't prevented fans from organizing summer screenings with shadow casts far and wide, it's futile to deny that it has at least an audience beyond home video and into the realm of true theatrical cultdom.

Meanwhile, the sheer sloppiness of Tommy Wiseau's infamous The Room has it similarly garnering underground popularity. I settled for seeing it on Cartoon Network when Adult Swim aired it as their idea of an April Fool's joke, and it became much more of a chore to »

‘The Room’ reappears

1 April 2009 5:30 AM, PDT | Celeb9.com | See recent Celeb9 news »

Released in 2003, 'The Room' is a black comedy that questions the very basis of love, and friendship. Its electrifying potrayal of a world of love, passion, lies, and betrayal presented through five main characters has an impact that stays on. The movie was described by screenwriter Michael Rousselet as "hilarious, but, somehow, it was also pure brilliance. It was a perfect movie on how not to make a movie..." Written, directed and shot by Tommy Wiseau, The Room "lets you appreciate failure in a free-form way.” (screenwriter Dan Murphy who has seen the film at least five times). Wiseau claims that he purposely made the film bad.

In Los Angeles, 'The Room' had become a cult phenomenon. Its fans includ.... »

"Everyone Betray Me!": A Primer on "The Room"

23 March 2009 2:10 PM, PDT | ifc.com | See recent IFC news »

Seated in front of a mantle upon which rests a football, a basketball, a bouquet of roses and a poster of his face, a man with a mysterious accent speaks about a movie. "Everything you see and experience was done meticulously with meticulous planning and with a lot of preparation," he says before adding, "This is the finished product," in case that was not made clear by the film itself.

The man is Tommy Wiseau. His film is called "The Room," which Wiseau wrote, directed, starred in, produced and executive produced (he receives on screen credit for both producing titles). No one knows where he or his accent comes from; Wiseau gives interviews, but is notoriously stingy with details about his personal life. Like the Coneheads, he claims a vague past in France. Like the Coneheads, his accent is most certainly not French. When Wiseau speaks in "The Room," he »
