Christina Applegate's ex-husband Johnathan Schaech has praised the actress' brave battle with breast cancer.

The Anchorman star recently underwent a double mastectomy, in her bid to beat the disease.

She has been given the all-clear after undergoing the operation, and has even returned to work on her hit U.S. sitcom Samantha Who?

And Schaech, who divorced the actress in 2005, insists he is proud of his ex.

He tells Usmagazine.com, "She is doing well. How wonderful it is that, because of what happened to her, people are becoming more aware.

"She is stepping out. She was on Oprah. She is making an effort to make everyone aware of everything that she learned from this - how to prevent and save lives.

"She is not a superhero - nobody is - but she is beating this."

Actress Christina Applegate felt sure she'd avoided the emotion of her recent cancer diagnosis, but burst into tears when a surgeon came to remove her breasts.

The Anchorman star admits she had no problems telling her doctor to remove her breasts but when it came to the actual double mastectomy, Applegate was suddenly overcome with emotion.

Speaking during a taping of Oprah Winfrey's U.S. talk show, which airs on Tuesday, the actress says, "I was just gonna let them (breasts) go... and then, when I met with my doctor and I told him that was my decision and he brought the surgeon in, it was like the floodgates just opened up and I lost it."

She tells Winfrey she'll always remember the moment she was told she had breast cancer: "Right now, I'm sitting here shaking, remembering that moment. As you guys know, you don't think it's gonna happen to me."

But Applegate admits she secretly knew she'd be diagnosed with cancer at some point - because her mother is a two-time breast cancer survivor.

She adds, "There was this part of me that sort of knew that the other shoe was gonna drop."

The setting was ironic. While attending a charity golf tournament, Will Ferrell told USA Today that he was no longer going to make sports comedies.

The star of Talladega Nights, Blades of Glory, Kicking and Screaming, and Semi-Pro says, "You know, I think I filled my quota."

"I will no longer attempt to do any sports movie, anymore. Any sports," clarified the legendary Ron Burgundy. "I'm retired from sports-genre films."

With Step Brothers marking the third straight year and fourth time since 2003 that he's had a movie earn over $100 million, Ferrell is free to focus on other pursuits. He is currently only committed to next year's Land of the Lost adaptation, although there has been rampant speculation that we'll see a follow-up to Anchorman sooner than later.

Entertainment Weekly has named the best comedies of the past 25 years, so you know what that means: Your opinion doesn't count for squat, even to yourself.

No, seriously, shut the eff up - Entertainment Weekly has spoken. These are the top 25 comedies of the past quarter century. So it is written, so it shall be done.

All kidding aside, it's a pretty good list, with the exception of Beverly Hills Cop being rated so high. It's not funnier than Spinal Tap. Sorry. It's just not. Speaking of the Tap, Christopher Guest is the King of Comedy, with his co-starring role in that film joining two of his directorial efforts - Waiting For Guffman (#13) and Best In Show (#20) - on the countdown.

Ben Stiller and Vince Vaughn both placed two films on the list, with There's Something About Mary hitting number seven. Curiously, Tropic Thunder made the top 20. I loved that movie,

Will Ferrell may be one of Hollywood's most beloved funnymen - but he's serious when it comes to food.

The Anchorman star is so protective of his meal leftovers, he forbids his wife from touching them.

And the comedian even separates his scraps so his partner doesn't mistake them for her own.

He says, "Even though I've been married for eight years, I do separate my food in the refrigerator from my wife's.

"I put labels on it that say 'This is Will's leftover chicken' or whatever. And if you touch it, yeah, I get livid."

Comedy actor Will Ferrell will host a live fundraising auction for a charity his cancer-surviving friend founded.

The Anchorman star and his wife Viveca will host the event during the 15th Annual Cancer for College Golf Classic in September, which also includes a golf tournament, banquet and after-party.

Craig Pollard, who was friends with Ferrell at the University of Southern California, set up the Cancer for College charity after he lost both his feet when he twice battled Hodgkin's lymphoma.

The charity aims to help cancer survivors seek college education - and Ferrell has supported the charity since 2006, calling it "one of the purest charities" he has ever seen.

Pollard says, "They (Ferrell and his wife) bring an instant awareness to the charity that we probably couldn't have achieved on our own. In life, people can choose to be charitable with their time or their money. Will and Viveca have been extremely generous to Cancer for College with both.

"He really goes out of his way to make sure everyone from the participants to the scholarship recipients and their families have a memorable day."

Actress Christina Applegate knew she would survive breast cancer - because she watched her own mother battle with the disease for years.

The 36-year-old star underwent a double mastectomy following her diagnosis with the deadly illness last month - leaving her "clear" of any tumours.

And she insists her mother Nancy - a two-time breast cancer survivor - was her saviour throughout the battle.

She says, "I watched (my mother) have a mastectomy, and then I watched her go through two years of chemotherapy and eight surgeries and a hysterectomy. I've watched this woman survive... so for me there was always that sense I was going to be okay, no matter what.

"I really love living and I really love my life and I knew from this moment on there was only going to be good that was going to be coming.

"Yeah, I'm going to face challenges, but you can't get any darker than where I've been. So just knowing that in my soul gave me the strength to just say I have to get out there and make this a positive."

The Anchorman star also shows she hasn't lost her infamous sense of humour, adding: "(Humour) is everything. Even in the hospital, there was so much laughter that was happening. And actually, it was sometimes good and sometimes not-so-good, because it can actually be painful to laugh that hard. But I've laughed so much in the last three weeks.

"Sometimes, you know, I cry and sometimes I scream and I get really angry, and I get into wallowing in self-pity sometimes. I think it's all part of healing. And anyone who's going through it out there: it's okay to cry, it's okay to fall on the ground and just scream if you want to. It's okay."

Breast cancer survivor Christina Applegate has launched a campaign to encourage women to undergo early testing for the deadly disease.

The Anchorman star insists it was the doctor-ordered Mri (magnetic resonance imaging) scan that helped her to beat the illness, following her diagnosis last month.

And the actress has responded by launching her own initiative to raise funds in an effort to help women at risk of contracting breast cancer.

She says, "Besides me being really vigilant about it, (the Mri) is the number one reason that I'm going to live. If this had been caught a year from now, or when I was 40, I probably wouldn't be able to live through this, or I would have to undergo such much more than I have.

"It's incredibly expensive. So for me, one of the things when this all happened was that I'm putting together a program to pay for MRIs for women who are at high risk - which means women who have had it in their family, or know that they're gene-positive.

"We're also going to pay for the (genetic) testing, because that's very, very expensive - it's upwards of $2,000 to $3,000... so all of that is coming together right now."

Last month, Applegate announced plans to participate in the U.S. TV telethon Stand Up To Cancer on 5 September, joining Meryl Streep, Sally Field, Jennifer Aniston and Scarlett Johansson in raising money for cancer research.

But the 36-year-old insists treatment has left her "clear" of any tumours.

She tells U.S. breakfast show Good Morning America, "I'm clear. Absolutely 100 per cent clear and clean. ... They got everything out so I'm definitely not going to die from breast cancer."

Applegate admits she was shaken after first learning she was ill.

She adds, "I was so mad and I just remember I was just shaking.

"And then also immediately, I had to go into 'take-care-of-business-mode,' which was, I asked them, 'What do I do now? What is it that I do? I get a doctor, I get a surgeon, I get an oncologist? What do I do?'"

Is Anchorman best left as it is? Although Will Ferrell has not exactly showed a great deal of versatility in his most successful films - they're all variations on the giant, screaming manchild character - he has never made a sequel, even though Old School, Talladega Nights, and Anchorman (and now, maybe, Step Brothers) have all performed very well. Usually, that's the only criterion for making a follow-up.

But there has been discussion and opinion about an Anchorman sequel since before the original film even opened. I remember attending the junket and Will Ferrell and director Adam McKay both said they'd like to come back to Ron Burgundy and the Channel 4 News Team because they had so much material left to cover. That talk has intensified recently, since Step Brothers is another Ferrell/McKay collaboration, and now Paul Rudd, who memorably played field reporter Brian Fantana, has chimed in on what he knows.

Christina Applegate is undergoing treatment for breast cancer, a spokesperson for the actress has announced.

The 36-year-old Anchorman star is expected to make a full recovery after being diagnosed with cancer during a regular MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scan, representative Ame Van Iden confirmed in a statement released to the media on Saturday.

The full statement reads: "Christina Applegate was diagnosed with an early form of breast cancer. Benefiting from early detection through a doctor ordered Mri, the cancer is not life threatening.

"Christina is following the recommended treatment of her doctors and will have a full recovery. No further statement will be issued at this time."

It was announced last month the star would participate in the U.S. TV telethon Stand Up To Cancer on 5 September, joining Meryl Streep, Sally Field, Jennifer Aniston and Scarlett Johansson in raising money for cancer research.

Applegate is also set to compete in next month's Emmy Awards, after receiving a nomination for Best Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for her role in hit TV show Samantha Who?

Our quick thoughts: “Step Brothers” is exactly what you would expect from a raunchy comedy developed by the guys who brought us “Anchorman” and “Talladega Nights.” It’s incredibly silly and yet quite entertaining, boasting a bunch of hilarious as well as ridiculous moments that will only appeal to those who thoroughly enjoy the works of Adam McKay, Judd Apatow, Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly.

Rivetting pictures like this helped X-Files to a miserable $5 million on opening day

Photo: 20th Century Fox Regular readers probably noticed RopeofSilicon is one of the few sites to not have a review of The X-Files: I Want To Believe online. Well, it isn't for a lack of trying to see it. Unfortunately due to Fox trying to keep this thing as hidden as possible (more on that in a sec) their screening coincided with my plane flight down to San Diego resulting in me not being able to see it in Seattle or San Diego. So, I had to go without a review. However, it appears it didn't matter, not many of you were going to see it as The Dark Knight continues its surge for a second weekend. Could it make it three next week? Too early to tell, but let's dig into these Friday estimates shall we?

The Anchorman star was incorrectly named as the victim of a hang gliding accident.

He says, "It was this crazy rumour that I had died and it was not fun to go through. It was rough.

"My publicist told me about it and I had to call my family and make sure they didn't hear it first - and believe it."

Such morons already dominate reality television and are slowly taking over the world as everything seems geared toward the idiots or the children. Believing I fall directly in the middle of that pile (perhaps slightly skewing more toward child) I can never connect or find humor in watching people portray stupid people for laughs. Stupidity, to me, isn't funny... it's stupid. Little did I know, outside of the two main characters in Step Brothers being stupid, everyone else in the cast is questionable as well. Is a smart comedy better than a dumb comedy? There are great examples of both, and even Will Ferrell, the star of Step Brothers, shows up on both lists. Stranger Than Fiction is a smart comedy with a complex premise and an almost poetic ending. Talladega Nights is a dumb comedy in which Ferrell, at one point, learns to face his fear of getting behind the wheel again by driving through a neighborhood sitting inches away from a wild cougar.

Each approach has its merits, although dumb comedies almost always produce bigger laughs and higher ticket sales. There’s a reason people still buy Three Stooges memorabilia, after all: Because at the end of the day, most people just want to see a comedy that can make them laugh and help them forget the reasons

Ever since The 40-Year-Old Virgin laid the first row of bricks in Judd Apatow's comedy kingdom, profane tales of arrested development have become so ubiquitous that they're seemingly the only type of comedy Hollywood is interested in producing. Though Apatow started this trend of overgrown man-children and the women who tolerate them, the blame can't rest entirely at his feet. In fact, the two films Apatow has written and directed—Virgin and Knocked Up—help account for where disappointments like Step Brothers go wrong. No matter how absurd the situations can get in Apatow's films, they're always grounded in characters and observations that are recognizably human and unbound by high-concept gimmicks. Working again with frequent partner Adam McKay, his director and co-writer on cartoonishly funny comedies like Anchorman and Talladega Nights, Will Ferrell errs on the side of the outrageous in Step Brothers and winds up trampling all over a great.
