The Tale Of Despereaux Movie Review -- Brian says The Tale of Despereaux is actually quite a misleading title

19 December 2008 | From Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news

"The Tale of Despereaux" is actually quite a misleading title. There's so much oddity floating around this misguided film, it leaves little room for our hero to accomplish anything worthy of sole title ownership. He's rendered a footnote in a cluttered fairy tale yearning for a sense of whimsy, only to conjure great bewilderment instead. Despereaux (voiced by Matthew Broderick) is a tiny mouse with huge ears and a tireless sense of curiosity. Enchanted by stories of King Arthur, Despereaux is hungry for adventure, much to the dismay of his fellow mice, who take great honor in fear. Befriending Princess Pea (Emma Watson) of the kingdom of Dor, the mouse tastes regality for the first time and loves it, only to find his community banishing him for his individuality, sending Despereaux to a life lived with the rats. One of those vermin is ...

The BBC has confirmed that Merlin will return for a second series. Anthony Head, who plays King Uther Pendragon in the show, last week revealed to Digital Spy that Merlin will be back for a second run. The fantasy series, which focuses on the young wizard's friendship with King Arthur, has been a Saturday-night ratings success since debuting on BBC One in September. Head of drama for BBC Wales Julie Gardner said: "We are thrilled that audiences have entered into the magical world of Camelot and Merlin has been such a big hit on Saturday nights. It has performed outstandingly well. "The cast have entertained and enchanted a whole new generation with this fresh and (more)

Posters: Clive Owen Doubles His Pleasure

13 December 2008 12:53 AM, PST | From GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news

When, exactly, was the last Clive Owen movie? After riding a pretty big wave of success that saw him go from the extremely average King Arthur to an Oscar nomination in Closer in six months, which was followed by great turns in Sin City and Inside Man, we haven't seen as much of Owen. Children of Men got rave reviews but was a commercial misfire, and Shoot 'Em Up bombed and Elizabeth: The Golden Age was not as good as it should have been.

So to answer our own question, by the time The International opens in February, it will have been about a year and a half since the last Clive Owen movie, but over two years since the last really good one.

He's hoping that turns around with back-to-back flicks that look really good, as far as I'm concerned: The sociopolitical thrilla The International and the the crime comedy Duplicity.

Ray Stevenson Joins the Hughes Brother's Book of Eli

2 December 2008 8:08 AM, PST | From firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news

Actor Ray Stevenson, who stars as Frank Castle this Friday in Punisher: War Zone, has joined the already impressive cast of the Hughes Brother's Book of Eli. You may recognize the name of this movie because this isn't the first time we've mentioned it, as a teaser poster showed up at the Afm a few weeks back. Stevenson will star alongside of Denzel Washington, Gary Oldman and Mila Kunis in this post-apocalyptic western, in which a lone man fights his way across America in order to protect a sacred book that holds the secrets to saving humankind. Stevenson will play an enforcer sent to kill Eli. Although he showed up in King Arthur, Stevenson's first big screen appearance and break out role will be Punisher this weekend, even if it does flop. The whole time I was watching it, I couldn't help but wonder where else I'd seen Stevenson and

The bloody sci-fi survival horror game Dead Space from Electronic Arts has been terrifying  gamers for several weeks now, and even more frightening than it’s ghoulish graphics is it’s original symphonic soundtrack. Composed by the renown composer Jason Graves with the help of The Skywalker Symphony Orchestra, Graves creates an intense, eerie soundscape for this first person shooter game that adds the perfect atmosphere to this nightmarish game. The Dead Space CD features 15 tracks of bombastic orchestrations offering a wide dynamic range from eerie, screeching strings to thunderous, frenetic percussions. A must have for lovers of dark and dissonant music, or for fans of the EA game itself.

Warner Bros. Has A ‘Thumb’ Up

9 October 2008 2:04 AM, PDT | From MovieBlog.Ugo.com | See recent Ugo MovieBlog news

Warner Bros. is developing “Thumb," a feature version of Tom Thumb, the diminutive folklore character who has had many entertainment incarnations over the years. “Enchanted” director Kevin Lima will direct the film, says The Hollywood Reporter. “Thumb” will primarily be a live-action movie, though Thumb may be depicted as a CG character. The movie, which could be fast-tracked by the studio, is said to be a fresh take that will explore the character’s origin story; the comedy-adventure is based on an original screenplay by “Saving Private Ryan” scribe Robert Rodat and will look at the heroism that a knight must summon after he is reduced to a pint size. Tom Thumb is a British legend that dates as far back as the 1500s; the minuscule hero is known for getting himself into mischief in his parents’ home and eventually winding up in the castle of King Arthur. 'Tom Thumb' Gonna Rock the Big Screen

"Tom Thumb" is springing up into the big screen. Warner Bros will produce the new 'Thumb' as live-action movie, although the character of Thumb will be brought to life with computer technology. This comedy-adventure will develop more on the heroism of the character than its original story.

"Enchanted" director Kevin Lima has been assigned by Warner Bros. to helm the project. The movie is originally adapted from a British legend dated back in the 1500s with the original screenplay penned by Robert Rodat, who has been buzzed for writing "Saving Private Ryan". Douglas Wick and Lucy Fisher will produce this movie via their Red Wagon banner, with Chris Chase sitting in the executive producer.

The story of "Tom Thumb" centers on an arrogant knight who shrinks to 6 inches while he is on the duty to protect a princess. The little hero is famous for getting himself into troubles with his

Cult Spy: Merlin's TV History

21 September 2008 12:18 AM, PDT | From Digitalspy | See recent digitalspy news

The BBC's lavish adaptation of the Arthurian legend has now arrived on our screens, depicting Merlin the sorcerer as a young lad moving into adulthood. But the character is no stranger to television, as Cult Spy's look at his past shows. Colin Morgan's current interpretation of Merlin certainly stands out from others, mainly because the magician is usually depicted as a wise and world-weary figure. Most recently, Australian actor Sam Neill starred in 2006 television movie Merlin's Apprentice, set after King Arthur's death and featuring the magician looking for the Holy Grail way before Indiana Jones first cracked his bullwhip. This venture followed an earlier 1998 3-hour mini-series with Neill that charted the rise and fall of Camelot. That same year, a rival television movie, also imaginatively entitled Merlin, featured Bond's offspring Jason (more)

Report From the Minions of Ka Dragon*Con Debut!

9 September 2008 1:23 AM, PDT | From DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news

"Challenge is a dragon with a gift in its mouth ... Tame the dragon and the gift is yours."

- Noela Evans

Holy. Freaking. Shit...What a show! Dragon*Con was as good as its billing as the largest show of its kind. The place was Swamped! And the best part was the extraordinary amount of people in costume. Needless to say, it was a little intimidating to be releasing our first graphic novel, The Minions of Ka, at such a place.

It started rather slowly. I was invited as a guest and was supposed to have a table. But, much like an airline, Dragon*Con overbooked its guests. And since I'm a little low on the famous people totem pole (like underground low), I was among the several that got bumped. 2 days before the convention! Needless to say, I was a little freaked out, seeing as how we spent a

Schweiger's a Bastard

2 September 2008 2:25 PM, PDT | From JoBlo.com | See recent JoBlo news

Joining last week's flurry of Inglorious Bastards casting (Diane Kruger, Daniel Bruhl, Paul Rust and Chrisoph Waltz) comes yet another somewhat familiar chiseled face: hunky German superstar Til Schweiger (King Arthur, Driven). Schweiger and his heroic jaw will be part of Brad Pitt's merry band of Nazi-killers operating in enemy territory in Quentin Tarantino's fast-moving WWII project. He'll next be seen shooting various C-list actors in the videogame adaptation Far Cry, the latest toxic...

Til Schweiger is a 'Bastard' too

2 September 2008 1:32 PM, PDT | From screeninglog.com | See recent screeninglog news

I don’t know how many articles I recently posted about the casting process of “Inglorious Bastards,” but it sure feels like quite a lot.

The latest to join the pack of Quentin Tarantino’s upcoming WWII drama is no other than German star actor-director Til Schweiger, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Schweiger is set to star as a member of a Nazi killer team. Brad Pitt, Eli Roth, Mike Myers, Michael Fassbender and B.J. Novak co-star.

Now, the article also mentions Daniel Brühl, who’s apparently also on board. I have to admit I missed that one.

Although Schweiger is not exactly a Hollywood regular, he’s had his share of appearances in major blockbusters. Acting credits include “King Arthur,” “Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life” and “Driven.”

Shooting is scheduled to begin Oct. 13 in Germany. We’ll keep you posted.

Schweiger and Bruhl Join 'Bastards'

2 September 2008 2:29 AM, PDT | From Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news

Thank the Lord it appears the casting for Quentin Tarantino's Inglorious Bastards may be almost complete as production begins Oct. 13 in Germany and there doesn't appear too many more major roles to fill. The latest names added to the bunch are German star Til Schweiger and Daniel Bruhl, the Spanish-born son of German director Hanno Bruhl. Bruhl and Schweiger join Diane Kruger, Christoph Waltz and Paul Rust who were added to the cast last Friday. Schweiger will play a member of the Nazi killer team, headed by Brad Pitt's character, Lt. Aldo Raine. Ain't It Cool speculates Bruhl may be playing the wily Gestapo major Dieter Hellstrom, or perhaps Nazi sniper-hero Frederick Zoller, or perhaps the German-speaking member of Raine's crew not played by Schweiger. Yeah, a lot of speculation there. However, AICN does have it down to two major roles left to be cast as they offer

Knightley Stands Firm In Breasts Row

28 July 2008 5:29 AM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Actress Keira Knightley has refused to allow her bust to be digitally enlarged - because she is so proud of her body.

The waif-like star, 23, reportedly dismissed studio bosses' suggestion to use computer trickery to boost her petite breasts on publicity posters.

It is claimed publicity shots for her forthcoming movie The Duchess would have featured a bustier version of the British actress - but she insisted against it.

A source tells British newspaper the Daily Mail, "She has insisted that her figure stay in its natural state. She is proud of her body and doesn't want it altered."

In 2004, Knightley was criticised when she appeared in publicity shots for King Arthur with digitally-enhanced breasts.

John Woo Directing His First Comic Book Movie

17 July 2008 8:29 AM, PDT | From firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news

Filmmaker John Woo has been hired to direct an adaptation of the upcoming comic book Caliber that will debut next week at Comic-Con. The comic story sets King Arthur and his knights as 19th century gunslingers in the Pacific Northwest. Apparently this one necessarily be Woo's next film, since he's finish up work on his two-part epic Red Cliff and has other projects lined up afterwards, including a film titled 1949. Woo has been criticized quite a bit here on the site, as he's one of the few directors who I genuinely hate. This project sounds like one of the worst he's planning to take on, similar to Paycheck, another disastrous film that he directed. Does anyone think Caliber could be any good? There's not much out there on this Caliber comic yet and that's because Radical Comics is launching the first issue at Comic-Con. So the comic has no buzz,
