NBC has released a "producer's cut" DVD version of its Kingpin miniseries, which it said, includes more graphic violence and language. It was not immediately clear whether this is the same version that had aired on the NBC-owned Bravo cable network, which was described as an "uncut version." (The series also aired on NBC's Spanish-language cable channel Telemundo.) »

Taking NBC news management aback, Jane Pauley has told the New York Times that she informed the network that she will not renew her contract after it expires in May. Pauley, 52, who currently co-anchors Dateline NBC and who started with the network at age 25 as co-host of the Today show, indicated that she has no specific plans for the future beyond finishing a book that she has been writing. Last year, she took a six-month sabbatical, professedly to work on the book, but she later told a magazine interviewer that she had contracted a swelling illness called "delayed-pressure urticaria" that requires a long treatment regimen. She told the Times: "I keep walking by bookstores and seeing titles talking about second acts in life ... [and wondering] what's next? or even, what is it I really want to do?" The Times observed that, given sharply declining ratings, the Tuesday edition of Dateline may be replaced when NBC announces its lineup for the fall in May. However, ratings for the heavily hyped short-run series Kingpin, which recently took over Dateline's Tuesday period, proved to be disappointing. »

Fox's chances of winning the February sweeps with entertainment programming for the first time were enhanced Tuesday night as American Idol won the 8:00 hour with a 13.1 rating and an 18 share. The numbers were achieved despite strong ratings for CBS's competing JAG, which drew a 10.5/15 and, in the first half hour, ABC's 8 Simple Rules, which recorded an 8.0/11. Fox's ratings declined to an 8.8/13 in the 9:00 hour for the drama 24, which was beaten by NBC's Frasier, with a 9.7/14 and CBS's The Guardian with a 9.3/13. At 10:00 p.m., NBC's Kingpin ended its current run with a third-rated 6.3/9. (Described by some critics as more violent than The Sopranos, the series is due to return with six additional episodes, presumably during the May sweeps.) Thanks to Idol, Fox was the top-rated network for the night with an average 11.0/15, followed by CBS with a 10.3/15. ABC was in third place with a 7.5/11, while NBC trailed with a 7.3/11. With relatively strong numbers for Smallville (6.0/9) and Gilmore Girls (5.3/7), The WB registered a competitive 5.6/8 for the night. »

Fox remained on a roll with American Idol Tuesday night. The talent show scored a 14.7 rating and a 21 share at 8:00 p.m., helping to boost the ratings of 24 25 percent to an 8.9/13 at 9:00 p.m. Fox won the night with an average 11.8/17. In second place was CBS with a 9.8/14. NBC placed third with an 8.0/12, followed by ABC with a 7.3/11. Particularly disappointing were the ratings for NBC's Kingpin. The highly promoted series, which scored strongly in its debut last Sunday (10.4/15) dropped 34 percent in its first appearance at its regular time to a 6.9/10. Another disappointment was the fourth-place showing of Life With Bonnie on ABC, which drew a 6.9/10 rating despite a guest appearance by Robin Williams. »

Sunday night's clash between cops (ABC's Dragnet) and robbers (NBC's Kingpin) saw the robbers winning the first round. Kingpin nabbed the 10:00 p.m. hour with a 10.4 rating and a 15 share, 7 percent higher than Dragnet (9.7/14). For NBC, the results marked a 30-percent spurt in ratings versus what the network's Boomtown had drawn in previous weeks. The two programs drew viewers away from the second hour of CBS's Hallmark Hall of Fame movie, Brush With Fate, which scored an 8.3/12 in the 10:00 p.m. hour. Nevertheless, CBS won the night with an average 9.2/13, followed by NBC with an 8.7/13. ABC was third with an 8.0/12, while Fox trailed with a 7.4/11. »
