Leaves you giggling for hours, 27 July 2004

I watched this film ages ago, sometime late at night in the German synchronized version. I remember feeling rather bored and also a little down. Along came this movie. Incidentally I caught it right in the middle, just my luck, as I thought bitterly, when after 10 minutes I was laughing like mad. I checked out the programme guide and saw, that it was on for a repeat later that same night. So I switched it off, stayed up till three in the morning, and watched it right from the beginning. And it was just the kind of film I needed, it made me laugh, and it made me feel quite good.

The story is told twice, from the perspectives of the main characters, and it beautifully shows all the misunderstandings and all the stupid kind of suffering that they experience. On the one hand, we have the narrative from Carlotas view, which really does resemble Ally-McBeal-Style, but leaves out the bad parts. Think a cross between Ally and Amélie Poulain. Then we get No. Ones Part, which is completely hilarious due to his insecurity and his desperate efforts to impress Carlota.

It all fits together beautifully, and I admire the pace of this movie, that never bored me throughout. One of my favourite scenes is, when Carlota is moved to tears by her coworker in a Chinese restaurant.

All in all, Nada en la nevera is a nicely crafted light comedy. For me, it is one of the perfect feel-good movies, that might not be great, but achieve what they were made for.

7.5/10

Nada en la nevera (what´s its title in English, "Nothing In the Fridge"?) is a pretty little cute movie. A romantic comedy if you wish.

What makes it adorable from the start, is the wittiness of its main character (whom by the way reminds me a little of Ally McBeal, cause of her look and her out-loud thoughts). The "I-don´t-care-that-much-about-anything-else-except-for-what-I-want" way of behaving really helps the film. Is she selfish? No, she´s enjoyable.

It may not be the most elegant story ever told by Spanish cinema (human body sounds and every obscene word that a Spanish girl can know), and the characters aren´t taken too deep into their reasons or thoughts... But hey... It´s cool (as the other reviewer said).

I´d say it´s a fun film to watch and enjoy.

First, Penélope isn´t in this film, only Coque and Maria. This is a funny movie, like Kevin Smith´s "Chasing Amy". It´s about a neurotic love in Carlota´s life. Nº 1 is the man?, Maybe. You´ll see the film, Cali::8/9

Romantic comedy of the her side/his side type, 20 April 2002
Author: (timotea) from San Juan, PR

"Nada en la Nevera" is not by all means a typical romantic comedy where the girl gets the guy and they live happily ever after; it is more a if girl gets the guy, will she live happily ever after?

The characters are very well developed, particularly Juan, the lesbian best friend. Jose Maria/Numero Uno is the typical forlorn sheepish artist, like John Cusack in High Fidelity (when it's his turn to tell the story. Maria Esteve, as Carlota, is worthy of the Ally McBeal comparisons of the other reviewer. She's flighty, constantly thinking out loud, though a lot edgier.

I give it 7 stars for unconventionality.
