Movie Review: RocknRolla

9 October 2008 3:17 AM, PDT | From The Movie Fanatic | See recent The Movie Fanatic news

Starring: Gerard Butler, Tom Wilkinson, Thandie Newton, Idris Elba, Chris Bridges, Jeremy Piven Director: Guy Ritchie Release Date: October 8, 2008 (Limited) Running Time: 114 min MPAA Rating: R Distributor: Warner Bros. - - - People ask the question...what's a RocknRolla? And I tell 'em - it's not about drugs, drums, and hospital drips, oh no. There's more there than that, my friend. We all like a bit of the good life - some the money, some the drugs, other the sex game, the glamour, or the fame. But a RocknRolla, oh, he's different. Why? Because a real RocknRolla wants the fucking lot. Who else can unite 7 million Euros, homosexuals, a child abused by his step-father, a rockstar who fakes his death a number of times, an old-school mobster and a new-school mobster, and a sophisticated black drug lord who has a passion for fine art? Guy Ritchie, that’s who

Review: Choke

6 October 2008 8:49 AM, PDT | From The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news

Choke is one of the dirtiest films I've seen in a long time, but it also has a great big heart. It would be unfair to dismiss the movie as an exploitive sex show, because it doesn't merely feature sex in the background. Sex is actually a supporting character in the piece.

In Choke, the gifted Sam Rockwell plays Victor, a sex addict who also gets his rocks off by going to various restaurants and intentionally choking on food. Why would he commit such a seemingly nonsensical act? In hope that he might bond with any of the patrons who come to his rescue.

Based on the novel by Chuck Palahniuk (Fight Club), Choke has many layers. It's much more than a tawdry sex show. This is a complex exploration into one man's sick affliction and while a good portion of the picture is played for laughs, the film doesn't

"Choke" on this...again: The Review

30 September 2008 10:49 PM, PDT | From Movie Jungle | See recent Movie Jungle news

Chuck Palahniuk is a provocative writer. His novels have inspired people to take action in their lives. Other people have taken his novels too literally. They have created groups where the sole point of membership is to pummel each other. Clearly they missed the point of Palahniuk arguing against the growing seed of commercialism. His first published novel was of course “Fight Club”. It won several awards and a Hollywood movie was made out of it. The movie was a box office disappointment, but it grew a large cult following after its release on video. Now comes the film “Choke”. It too was adapted from a Palahniuk novel. In the previous film and in this film, support groups play a major role in the proceedings. Here the realm is sex addicts instead of testicular cancer survivors. Sam Rockwell plays Victor Mancini, a colonial recreator who had a turbulent childhood. He

Movie Review: Choke

28 September 2008 10:26 PM, PDT | From The Movie Fanatic | See recent The Movie Fanatic news

Starring: Sam Rockwell, Angelica Huston, Brad William Henke, Kelly Macdonald Director: Clark Gregg Release Date: September 26, 2008 Running Time: 89 min MPAA Rating: R Distributor: Fox Searchlight Pictures - - - Before a single scene was ever filmed, the movie Choke was at a disadvantage. Whether or not the film would be any good was of little relevance. It was already handicapped by two inevitable comparisons: to the Chuck Palahniuk novel the movie was based on and to the David Fincher’s Fight Club, also adapted from a Palahniuk book. They are fair comparisons for obvious reasons but in the interest of continuing that fairness I watched this movie with two thoughts in mind. One, this wasn’t going to be Fight Club. Choke didn’t have the director, stars or the budget to even come close to competing. Two, and most importantly, the books are always better. Saying you didn

Review: Choke

26 September 2008 6:41 AM, PDT | From Cinematical.com | See recent Cinematical news

(With Choke arriving in theaters this weekend, we're re-running our review of the film from the Sundance Film Festival)

By: Erik Davis

Fans of author Chuck Palahniuk (and trust me, there's a lot of them) have been waiting a long time to witness another one of his fantastic books show up on the big screen. The first Palahniuk adaptation, of course, was Fight Club, which was handled flawlessly by director David Fincher and featured sensational performances from both Edward Norton and Brad Pitt. Choke is an entirely different book, one that relies a little more on comedy, and first-time director Clark Gregg (who also penned the script) decided to turn this adaptation into a straight-up laugher that really works ... some of the time. While I'm a huge fan of Palahniuk, his books and especially Choke, there's only one reason why I would recommend you check out this film, and one reason only: Sam Rockwell.

A Roundtable Chat with the Stars of Choke

Movie Review - 'Choke'

26 September 2008 12:04 AM, PDT | From GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news

Choke

Starring Sam Rockwell, Anjelica Huston, and Kelly Macdonald

Directed by Clark Gregg

Rated R

Victor Mancini (Sam Rockwell) has a problem. He's a sex addict. He attends group therapy sessions, primarily to meet new women to have sex with. He's clearly out of control, so much so that he can't see the cliff he went over from where he is now. Victor Mancini has a problem. His mother (Anjelica Huston) is slowly slipping from reality. She's in an expensive hospital that doesn't treat her so much as it keeps her alive. Because Victor doesn't make much money working as a street character in a recreation of a colonial town, one of those places that would not exist without school field trips, he has to find alternate means of bankrolling his mother's stay.

Victor Mancini has a problem. Rather than getting a second job in telemarketing or just a better first job,

25 September 2008 10:00 PM, PDT | From The Scorecard Review | See recent Scorecard Review news

Choke Directed by: Clark Gregg Cast: Sam Rockwell, Angelica Huston, Kelly Macdonald, Brade William Henke Time: 1 hr 30 mins Rating: R Plot: A sex-addicted con-man (Rockwell) dropped out of medical school to get a job to afford his mother's (Huston) hospital bills. He also plays on the sympathies of others who rescue him from choking to death at restaurants. Who’s It For? It's a dark comedy that should have gone darker. Based on Chuck Palahniuk's novel, it doesn't carry the same bite or impact as Fight Club. Expectations: I actually had the book Choke waiting for me at the library, but due to an early screening, I didn't read it before the film. All I knew was Rockwell was starring. Safe Men made me a Rockwell fan. SCORECARD (0-10) Actors: Sam Rockwell as Victor: Rockwell's wispy loaf of a haircut doesn't aid him well, but he does his best

Chuck Palahniuk, Author of CHOKE

24 September 2008 10:01 AM, PDT | From Spout.com | See recent Spout news

Chuck Palahniuk, the author behind David Fincher’s Fight Club and Clark Gregg’s Choke, opening in theaters this Friday 9/26, pens intelligent, well-written junk food. I enjoy reading all his books, and even have a friend I nicknamed Brandy Alexander after the transgender lead character in Invisible Monsters, yet whenever someone asks me the plot of a particular novel that isn’t Invisible Monsters, I draw a blank. I mean, I’m certain I’ve read his books, just like I’m certain I ate dinner last Thursday, I just can’t tell you exactly what it was. So when I learned I had an email interview with the author himself scheduled I had to dig out my old copy of Choke</em ...

AMERICAN PSYCHO... The Musical?!

24 September 2008 9:22 AM, PDT | From iconsoffright.com | See recent Icons of Fright news

I bet you that Bret Easton Ellis never in a million years could've predicted that his disturbing novel for AMERICAN PSYCHO would one day not only be adapted into a film, but... a Broadway musical?!

The Hollywood Reporter says, "Producers are betting Bret Easton Ellis' novel and screen adaptation AMERICAN PSYCHO will translate to a stage musical, with original 1980s-inspired songs and familiar covers of hits from the era. The Johnson-Roessler Co.'s David Johnson, Craig Roessler and Jesse Singer, the Collective's Aaron Ray and XYZ Films' Nate Bolotin have partnered to acquire, develop and produce the tale of violent Wall Street investment banker Patrick Bateman. Ellis and Edward R. Pressman, the producer of Mary Harron's 1999 film adaptation, will serve as consulting producers."

The article continues, "No director, book writer or songwriters have yet been brought on board the project, but producers say they're in early talks with

Interview: Chuck Palahniuk on "Choke"

24 September 2008 6:33 AM, PDT | From ifc.com | See recent IFC news

By Aaron Hillis

In my favorite Chuck Palahniuk novel, "Survivor," a former religious cult member-turned-celebrity messiah records his life story into the black-box recorder of a commercial airliner aimed to crash in the Australian outback. "Invisible Monsters" chronicles a former fashion model (before her jaw was blown off by a drive-by shooting) as she road-trips with a pill-popping transsexual to find herself. And I think we all know what happens in "Fight Club," whether we read the book or just watched embittered everyman Edward Norton grapple with the Brad Pitt-looking anarchist sharing his headspace. Palahniuk certainly loves to satirize the nihilism and social diseases wallowing in the underbelly of American culture, so it makes sense in this confusing, tumultuous zeitgeist that a second film would erupt from Palahniuk's pages. In the psychotically funny "Choke," adapted and directed by character actor Clark Gregg ("Iron Man"), Sam Rockwell is perfectly cast

INT: Chuck Palahniuk

When Chuck Palahnuik writes a character, it always feels like someone you may know, but not someone you.ve seen before. He takes these unique and fascinating (sometimes sickening) men and women and weaves a story around their life. CHOKE is certainly a good example of this. Victor Mancini is a womanizing sex addict, who is also a con-man with a day job reenacting history. Bizarre? Yes. But interesting none the less. If you love FIGHT CLUB, you are in for a big surprise here. While...

A sex-addicted con artist who spends his days working in a Colonial Williamsburg theme park isn't the type of role too many actors would want -- let alone be able to carry off. Yet Sam Rockwell does with perfect aplomb in Choke, the movie version of Chuck Palahniuk's cult novel of the same name. Find out how he prepared for his seedy role in our exclusive interview with Sam Rockwell.
