Cowabunga, Dude! Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise sold to Nickolodeon.

24 October 2009 12:36 PM, PDT | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

The venerable Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise "has acquired the global rights to the property from the Mirage Group and 4Kids Entertainment."  "The global intellectual property rights to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles... cost $60 million."  Nickolodeon already has plans for the newly acquired property:  the company's "sister company Paramount will steer a new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles feature to the bigscreen, planned for 2012. Scott Mednick (300) is producing the pic." The Nickolodeon deal also nets the company "all merchandising rights to the Turtles," which"will continue to work with its original and longstanding toy partner, Playmates Toys."   Nickolodeon is also planning on "developing a CG-animated TV series based on the Turtles, also slated to premiere in 2012." Sixty million dollars sounds like a good investment on Nickolodeon's part.  The franchise is in a kind of limbo now, their original audience has grown up, and do children even care? Tmnt proved they did not. »

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Most played-out pop-culture entities of all time?

23 October 2009 7:00 AM, PDT | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

Nickelodeon bought the rights to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles this week, announcing their plans to produce a CG-animated TV series launching in 2012, the same year as Paramount Pictures (owned by the same parent company, Viacom) will release yet another Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles feature film. If you're keeping track, this will be the third animated TV series (we shan't count the Saban-produced live-action show), the fifth feature film, and, eventually, the kajillionth excuse to stuff our country's already-overflowing landfills with another exciting round of plastic Tmnt tie-in toys and fast-food trinkets. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Take Their Pizza and 90s Slang to Nickelodeon and Paramount

21 October 2009 11:11 AM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

If 7-year-old me read the trades, he would be beside himself today with the news that his favorite TV show, “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” would be moving to his favorite network, “Nickelodeon”.  Present-Day me thinks that’s adorable, reflects on our current milieu of toy-based properties and their relationship to the emotional development of adults, and then returns to some recreational reading.  7-year-old me weeps for his future.

No matter your age or the age of your sad-inner-child, hit the jump for what this means in terms of rebooting the project, the upcoming film, and how a new generation can bug their weary parents for every new action figure of Raphael (or whomever their favorite ninja turtle may be).

Variety reports that at the bargain price of $60 million, Viacom, the parent company of Nickelodeon and Paramount, has acquired the rights to Mirage Group and 4Kids Entertainment’s “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles »

Today's eBay Prop-Watch Is Filled To Bursting With Turtle Power

4 September 2009 1:00 PM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

The eBay Prop-Watch pick for today stopped me dead in my tracks. Granted, I wasn't actually walking at the time, but I'm speaking in a metaphorical sense you jerk. Today's pick isn't just some random prop from "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles." It's an assortment of props from multiple "Turtles"-related projects.

There are a few caveats. First: it's expensive. Damn expensive. The Buy It Now is set at $5,000 and bidding opens at $3,5999. Second: not everything is in pristine condition, as you'll see in the image after the jump. And finally: there's no mention in the description of any sort of Certificate of Authenticity. The items certainly look legit, though someone who's prepared to rip another person off for $5K is probably will to spend a little bit to make the ruse believable.

Still... it's hard to call this auction anything less than badass.

See what I'm talking about? Bad. Ass. »

Okay, so they're unfinished turtle heads, but c'mon! [TV] Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Complete Season 8

1 September 2009 7:00 AM, PDT | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

The pleasure of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles could be easily epitomized by any number of lines of dialogue, visual details, or questionable pieces of logic, but I’ll be lazy and go with the one that comes in the very first few minutes of the first episode in this collection. The Turtles (Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael, and Michelangelo; all named for Italian renaissance artists) are talking to crack reporter April O’Neal, who informs them that a gang of car thieves are hiding in the ‘old warehouse across the street’. She then points to the warehouse, which has a large sign at the front with simply the word ‘warehouse’ across it. I spent several moments wondering why that would ever be necessary, but by that point I had already missed all sorts of crap about Dimension X, and had to rewind.

The premise of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is fairly »

Cowabunga Dudes! The heroes in a half shell have returned, as with several others 80s figures, and make their way onto Blu-ray. This new anniversary edition really doesn.t add much special features to the discs but puts some in the oversized pizza box the flicks come in. In the sewers of New York, some toxic ooze drips out of its canister and infects a rat and four turtles. The rat mutates into master Splinter and the turtles gain amazing strength and intelligence. Splinter names them Donatello, Michelangelo, Leonardo, and Raphael after the famous renaissance painters. Years pass and Splinter trains the turtles in the way of the ninja. John Fusco to write 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles'

21 July 2009 2:09 AM, PDT | screeninglog.com | See recent screeninglog news »

As you may know already, a live-action reboot of "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" is in early developmental stages, and now the project has found its writer: John Fusco.

The film is apparently expected to be ready for release in 2011, and the story will likely focus on the origins of Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello and Raphael.

According to Variety, Fusco is quite knowledgeable when it comes to martial arts. He also wrote last year's "The Forbidden Kingdom," which I personally hated. Some of his other credits also include "Hidalgo" and the upcoming "The Seven Samurai."

The turtles have already made several big-screen appearances. "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" debuted in 1990, and "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze" followed in '91. "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III" opened in 1993.

Who out there thinks it's a smart idea to bring back the crime-fighting hero turtles? Sound off below. »

Kevin Eastman Breaks Out of His Shell with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

The co-creator of the popular series talks about the series' origins, the 25th Anniversary of the creation, the newly-announced film, Heavy Metal and more.

25 years ago, Kevin Eastman's idea that he co-hatched with Peter Laird came to fruition when the first issue of radical new comic called Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles hit the comic book stands. Soon thereafter, a licensing phenomena was born that spawned into the popular Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles animated TV series, the popular Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles films, including 2007's Tmnt. Cowabunga! Another Ninja Turtles Film

23 April 2009 4:30 PM, PDT | BuzzFocus.com | See recent BuzzFocus.com news »

It's been 25 years since the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles took the comic book world by storm, making kids want to take to their local sewers with a skateboard and a slice of pizza in their hand. The success of the comic book was only trumped by the awesomeness of the animated cartoon that ran for nine years starting in 1987. Four feature films later, we find that the Ninja Turtles will be reborn again on the big screen in live-action fashion. In 2011, The Mirage Group will bring an origins story to theaters, focusing on the how Leonardo, Raphael, Michaelangelo and Donatello came about. The movie will seemingly be unconnected to any of the films release, which is a good thing.  The three live-action films were of decreasing quality, with a significant drop off after the first. That 1990 film is still universally cherished as the best of the three. The ... »

"Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" Karate Chops Back to the Big Screen

Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello, and Raphael are making their way back to the big screen! This time, the focus will be their origins, including their master Splinter.

The Mirage Group is planning to release the film in 2011.

I grew up with this franchise, and I have a soft spot for the Turtles. So this is a welcomed news.

"Tmnt" released in 2007 was just okay, but I think going back to their origins can make the characters more interesting.

By the way, the Turtles are celebrating their 25th anniversary which kicks off Thursday at the Tribeca Film Festival where the first "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" will be unspooled. »

New Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Live-Action Movie!

23 April 2009 6:35 AM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

The re-make machine is now targeting our childhood by bringing back our favorite crime-fighting mutated turtles to the big screen. The project is said to focus on the origins of the team and will bring our heroes Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello and Raphael and the wise master Splinter together for a new live-action adventure.

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles celebrate their 25th anniversary next month as we look back at their debut in the 1984 comic book that led to cartoons, a series of live-action films followed by an animated 3-D film, a pile of video games and a ton of toy merchandise (including the awesome Cowabunga Carl Party Van with built-in Pizza shooter! You know what I’m talking about).

As cool as this may be to see another live-action incarnation after 16 years, I’m not sure a modern live-action Tmnt film will fly amongst today’s audiences. Nevertheless, I’m »
