  • During the scene where Pee-wee briefs his friends on his missing bicycle, the map behind him is of San Francisco, CA.

  • The dinosaurs at the truck stop where Pee-wee meets Simone are at the Wheel Inn Restaurant in Cabazon, CA.

  • Paul Reubens mentions on the commentary that during the scene in the movie where he is wheeled out of the bike shop on a gurney, Elizabeth Daily's face went completely white. After filming the scene, he asked her what was wrong... apparently she was having flashbacks of her boyfriend Jon-Erik Hexum being wheeled off of a movie set on a gurney. (He accidentally shot himself whilst filming Cover Up (1984) (TV)).

  • When Pee-wee weighs in at the beginning of the movie, we see that he is in fact a 98 pound weakling.

  • Director Cameo: [Tim Burton] the thug who accosts Pee-wee just before he enters the fortune teller's studio.

  • Jan Hooks improvised the dialogue for her scenes as the Alamo tour guide.

  • Cameo: [Phil Hartman] reporter interviewing Francis at the drive-in.

  • Cameo: [Lynne Marie Stewart] impatient mother superior at a movie set.

  • Cameo: [John Paragon] man dressed in red armour with a high voice that Pee-Wee talks to at the movie lot. All these people have appeared on The Pee-wee Herman Show (1981) (TV) and "Pee-wee's Playhouse" (1986).

  • Pee-wee's phone number in the movie is 354-8567.

  • Loosely based on Ladri di biciclette (1948).

  • The Drive-in sequence was filmed at the Studio Drive In, formerly located in Culver City CA. The Studio was built in the 1930s, and was the first Drive-in Theatre constructed in California. It served as a set for several films, including Grease (1978). It was closed in 1993 and demolished in 1998. No trace of this Drive-in remains.

  • When Pee Wee first arrives at Warner Bros studios, the Batmobile from "Batman" (1966) can be seen entering the left side of the screen, right behind the blue Warner Bros sign, and turns left away from the camera.

  • The band that is recording a music video when Pee-Wee passes them during the Warner Bros. chase sequence is Twisted Sister. The song they were recording the music video for is "Burn in Hell".

  • A deleted scene on the DVD features in the background the diner sign from Mel's Diner from the sitcom "Alice" (1976), which was shot at Burbank Studios.

  • We briefly glimpse the Batmobile from the classic TV series. Tim Burton the director would eventually go on to make Batman (1989).

  • The car that Pee-wee gets picked up in by Mickey is a 1958 Ford Edsel.

  • During the entire time Large Marge tells her story, she never blinks.

  • Cameo: [Professor Toru Tanaka] [Francis's butler.]

  • During the scene in the magic shop, a poster can be seen on the front of the counter for someone called "Alexander". The picture is quite clearly Jambi the Genie from "Pee-wee's Playhouse" (1986).

  • As Pee Wee walks into the magic shop at the beginning of the film, you can see a poster of "Elvira Mistress of the Dark". Elvira is the alter-ego of Cassandra Peterson, who plays the "Biker Momma" at the biker bar later on in the film.

  • In real life Paul Reubens was very sick from the flu during the scene where he returns to the bike shop after his bike is stolen and Pee-Wee falls on the bikes. This is mentioned in the commentary.

  • Cameo: ['Tom Berringer'] Patron that turns around in the diner after the Large Marge sequence.

  • During the magic shop scene, Mario shows Pee-wee heads of different sizes. The largest head that he shows Pee-wee last is actually Aleister Crowley.

  • Approximately 10 to 12 bicycles were built for the movie by the Pedal Pusher Bike Shop in Newport Beach CA; a shop that specialized in vintage and classic bicycles and parts. They were offered $10,000 and no screen credit or screen credit only. The shop chose the money. The bike shop had an autographed 8x10 glossy of Paul Reubens that said "To Mike at Pedal Pusher: 'Arrrrgggg!' From Pee Wee Herman."
