'Ridgemont High' Inspirations Are Now Protective Parents

4 hours ago | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Would you want your children to know you were the real-life inspiration for a famous tale of sex, drugs, and rock 'n' roll? Fast Times at Ridgemont High holds up as a heady brew of authentic teen life in the late 70s / early 80s, mixed with a fine sense of the absurd and served up by an amazing cast. It's definitely a teen sex comedy that Doesn't suck. The movie's 25th anniversary two years ago inspired plenty of "Where Are They Now" recollections; our own Erik Davis offered his observations on an eye-opening gallery of "then and now" images for the cast.

Before the movie, however, there was the book, and before the book, there were the real-life students of Clairemont High School in San Diego, California. Cameron Crowe, then 22, went undercover at the school in 1979 to research a book on teen life. He'd graduated from another area school in »

Amy Heckerling Gets Vampy with Krysten Ritter

7 November 2009 12:33 PM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

I hope you don't hate vampires, because they don't seem to be going anywhere. Now Amy Heckerling, the woman behind Fast Times at Ridgemont High and Clueless, is getting in on the bloodsucking. According to Screen Daily, Parlay Films has grabbed the international rights to an upcoming romantic comedy called Vamps, that Heckerling will write and direct.

"The film will be a modern-day tale of two young female vampires living the good life in New York until love enters the picture and each has to make a choice that will jeopardize their immortality." Krysten Ritter will star as one of the lead vamps, and they're still searching for the other bloodsucker. This marks a big jump from the actress, who has moved from bubbly side gigs on shows like Gilmore Girls and Veronica Mars to some cinematic supporting roles, a lead gig in the web series Woke Up Dead, and »

Parlay Films Buys Rights to Heckerling's Vamps

5 November 2009 3:01 PM, PST | iconsoffright.com | See recent Icons of Fright news »

According to Screen Daily, Parlay Films has bought all international film rights to Amy Heckerling's forthcoming horror comedy Vamps at the American Film Market.  Heckerling is more known for her coming of age comedies such as Fast Times At Ridgemont High and Clueless than horror fare, so it'll be interesting to see how she does with a romantic comedy about young, attractive vampires.

Screen Daily says that actress Krysten Ritter is already attached to the project, which should start filming in March, 2010.

Afm: Amy Heckerling Not Clueless About Vamps

5 November 2009 12:27 PM, PST | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

Director Amy Heckerling of Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Clueless, and those damned Look Who's Talking flicks is ready to throw her hat into the blood-sucking arena with the new film Vamps.

According to Screen Daily Parlay Films has acquired all international rights to the romantic comedy Vamps, which will be written and directed by Heckerling.

The film will be a modern-day tale of two young female vampires living the good life in New York until love enters the picture and each has to make a choice that will jeopardize her immortality.

Krysten Ritter (pictured right) is on board as one of the female leads with additional casting under way. If the name sounds familiar, it's because she's also one of the stars of Jon Heder's new web series "Woke Up Dead" that we reported on recently.

Judging from her previous work, I wouldn't be looking for this flick »

Interview: Adam Goldberg on the Art of Performance in ‘(Untitled)’

4 November 2009 3:30 PM, PST | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – The Adam Goldberg character is well known to fans of TV’s “Friends” and the movie’s “Saving Private Ryan.” With his heart-on-his-sleeve persona, he takes that character to rarified heights in the new film “(Untitled).”

Set in the galleries and small symphony halls of New York City, (Untitled) is a deeply philosophical look at the nature of art, through three characters who each believe they understand the essence of what art is within themselves.

Adam Goldberg plays Adrian, a composer of atonal symphonies, whose work continues to go unrecognized. His brother Josh (Eion Bailey), is a successful painter of hotel decor-style art, who longs to be recognized for more. Rounding out the triad is Madelaine (Marley Shelton), the arty and pretentious gallery owner who strives for the next atmospheric happening.

Is Motorola's Android Phone for Kids?

10 September 2009 3:00 PM, PDT | Fast Company | See recent Fast Company news »

Today Motorola released its first Android device: the Cliq for T-Mobile. And while most Android comparisons run right to the iPhone, this thing looks more poised to steal teen approval from the Sidekick.

Inside, it sports the same guts as the G1, myTouch 3G, and the Hero: a 528MHz chip and a healthy 256Mb of Ram. But the software suite, which Motorola has haplessly named Motoblur, is all about time-wastery and social butterflying. The home screen is set up as a feed for Facebook, MySpace, and Twitter updates; good old Google and Gmail proclivities are baked in, too. Motorola is calling the Cliq the "first phone with social skills," which, as far as phone personas go, is more Fast Times at Ridgemont High than The New York Times. (The iPhone, by comparison, might be classified as an erudite introvert; the Blackberry as a sleepless analyst. The Pre could be, well, »

Re-examining The Burning (1981)

7 September 2009 4:02 PM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

Can you say Friday The 13th rip-off? Good, your understanding of the English language is at least sufficient (that‘s my pretend pretentiousness emerging). Now move on from that notion, because while The Burning was clearly inspired by Friday, it’s got some fantastic elements that enable the picture to stand firm on it’s own accord. First off, the “rules” of a slasher are treated with great liberty here. Neither writer Harvey Weinstein nor writer/director Tony Maylam restrict their script maneuvers by insisting upon following the beaten path. Second, the cast is absolutely terrific, showcasing an array of actors and actresses who would go on to build highly successful careers. Third, Tom Savini is on board for the special effects… need I say more on that topic? Add it all up and the result is a kick ass slasher film that could very easily be considered superior to Friday The 13th, »

Watch Out!: Bad Boys (1983)

3 September 2009 7:57 AM, PDT | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

In the wake of news that Columbia is shopping for a third Bad Boys movie, I thought we'd take a look at the first one. Not the Will Smith and Martin Lawrence cop movie, but the teen prison movie from the 80's.

I don’t remember which Bad Boys I saw first. I believe the timing was in very close proximity to each other. It’s clear that this version made more of an impression on me, just by the fact that whenever I hear the name Bad Boys, I would think of this film first before Michael Bay’s. Bad Boys is a 1983 film starring Sean Penn, released right after he catapulted into fame with his role as Spicoli in Fast Times at Ridgemont High. A dramatic film, Penn’s role in Bad Boys was a complete 180 from Spicoli, and mapped the path for his future career in being sullen. »

Ultimate Hotties: EW's staff picks

27 August 2009 5:00 AM, PDT | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

We've spent the better (hotter?) portion of the summer reviving our fascination with the concept of the Ultimate Hotties of the Year -- in subcategories like Comedy, Action/Thriller, Crime-Fighting, Geek, and Vampires (apparently they're popular). In 2007, readers voted Angelina Jolie and Wentworth Miller as prom king and queen; this year, Robert Pattinson led your Top 25. And since favoritism can be limiting, here are the 25 hotties you can't believe we missed. Now that '09's long, strange trip is over, some EW staffers decided -- in the spirit of "why the heck not?" -- to create our own lists of Things That Are Hot. Slezak and Mandi followed the rules and chose broadly but from within the parameters of the past year, while Dalton and Josh went the esoteric route of just naming random people and/or characters they've at one point found intriguing. Hey, whatever. They go around the »

Cameron Crowe Directed Pearl Jam Music Video “The Fixer”

26 August 2009 10:30 PM, PDT | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

We haven't heard much from writer/director Cameron Crowe's (Fast Times at Rigemont High, Almost Famous, Jerry Maguire) since production on his next film, the Hawaiian adventure romantic comedy Deep Tiki, got postponed until 2010. Crowe decided to also direct a music video for the band Pearl Jam. Watch the video embedded after the jump. The video is a typical live performance shoot, and not much more. I think I'm most disappointed because Crowe's films play like a music album, cut to songs perfectly synced to the drama on screen. I would have loved to see him actually direct a video featuring a narrative story, just to see what he could do when dialogue is no longer required at all. The video was filmed at Seattle's Shadowbox Theater, and aside from shooting the performance with green screens on the sides and background, projecting images of the crowd and or band, »

Pop Up In Video

22 August 2009 11:30 PM, PDT | NYPost.com | See recent New York Post news »

I have, at times, jokingly admonished friends with a quick, "Put ... that coffee ... down," channeling Alec Baldwin's irate salesman in "Glengarry Glen Ross." Or attempted to intimidate with Clint Eastwood's classic "Do you feel lucky ... punk?" from "Dirty Harry."

In my younger days, I took inspiration from Sean Penn's archetype stoner Jeff Spicoli, hitting himself in the head with a checkered skateboard sneaker in "Fast Times at Ridgemont High": "That was my skull! I'm so wasted! »

Five High School Movie Pranks That Don’t Involve Yearbook Profanity

18 June 2009 2:00 PM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

It’s not every day that a high school prank hits the newswire. A high school senior in Shaker Heights, Ohio, made headlines by designing a yearbook cover that hid an a F-bomb of a farewell salute. He was forced to apologize and the school quickly recalled the yearbooks, but most seniors are holding onto their obscene copies in salute to their artistic prankster. At Shaker’s graduation ceremony last week, he was hailed as a hero of the senior class, receiving loudest applause and the most cheers of any student as he accepted his diploma.

So, to salute the hero of Shaker Heights and every other senior prankster, I’ve compiled five of the best high school movie pranks. It’s hard to narrow it down to just five because they’re a staple of comedies, drama and horror alike. Keep that genre-spanning in mind if you’re dreaming »

Cult of the Week: The Ancient Mystic Order of Homeroom

1 June 2009 6:00 AM, PDT | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

Art imitates life. Until art gets so thoroughly processed by focus groups and marketing departments that it wins an MTV Movie Award. Then, art turns into product, which is imitated by the single-brain-celled form of life that spends a small fortune of its parents’ money texting in random strings of consonants to PunchMuch. And it’s these creatures that feed off the circle of high school films imitating life imitating art. And what they shit out is what becomes the next film in the cycle. High school cinema mainly relies on a very simple premise; teen life is entirely driven by social hierarchy and tribal culture. By transforming high school into a cross between The Warriors and Abercrombie and Fitch ads, films like The New Guy and Clueless depend entirely on this compartmentalization of social circles. Which is, of course, complete and utter bullshit. I have lurked in several high schools while trolling for dates, »

Townsend Coleman Reminisces on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

22 May 2009 2:23 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

The voice of Michelangelo on the highly-popular animated series takes a look back on the 25th anniversary of this creation.

Townsend Coleman was a DJ and radio personality in Cleveland, Ohio for many years, when he decided it was time to pursue his dreams of becoming an actor, and moved his family to Hollywood in 1984. Due to his radio experience, he found more work as a voice actor and in 1987 he took on the voice of a character that would be part of a cultural phenomena in the 80s and 90s: the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles animated series. Coleman performed the voice of my personal favorite turtle, Michelangelo, and I recently had the chance to speak with him over the phone about the 25th anniversary of these wonderful characters' creation and the four-part Season 7 DVD set that was broken off into four "slices" - Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Season 7, Pt. »
