Cincinnati Pulls Plug on 'Cops'

28 May 2004 | From Studio Briefing | See recent Studio Briefing news

After a raucous Cincinnati City Council session on Wednesday in which several council members demanded that Police Chief Tom Streicher stop allowing camera crews for the Fox reality series Cops to ride along in police vehicles, Streicher reluctantly withdrew the invitation to the show's producers, Langley Productions, on Thursday. "Personally, I think it's the loss of a golden opportunity to showcase the police department," he told today's (Friday) Cincinnati Inquirer. "But why be in the midst of another controversy?" As reported by the newspaper, at one point Councilman Christopher Smitherman said that no one needed to see local police "hogtying" African-Americans, a remark that led an official of the Fraternal Order of Police to reply that Cincinnati officers don't hogtie suspects and that Smitherman should apologize for his remarks. Vice Mayor Alicia Reece commented: "I don't know if we want to put our fate in the hands of an editor in California." Streicher told the newspaper that Cops producers were furious about the decision, saying it was the first time that any city had ever withdrawn an invitation. Crews had filmed in Cincinnati for two days and had planned to remain for eight weeks.

NBC's Rivals Won't Go Down without a Fight

6 May 2004 | From Studio Briefing | See recent Studio Briefing news

All three of NBC's rival networks are planning to challenge the Friends finale. CBS is offering a new episode of its top-rated CSI: Crime Scene Investigation. Fox is presenting an extended version of Cops, titled "Crimes of Passion." And ABC is actually engaging in some feisty opposition, presenting a special edition of its highest-rated program, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, titled "Friends Helping Friends," in which a Manhattan apartment is being made over in real time, with a special progress report presented during each commercial break on Friends and a final 10-minute unveiling of the redo at the end of a shortened Primetime Thursday at 10:50 p.m. In the oddest bit of counter-programming, the TV Land channel will air episodes of sitcoms featuring the Friends stars "Before They Were Friends," then at 9:00 they will air ... nothing (except a group of the network's staffers, sitting around a TV set watching the finale).

Football Rules on Saturday

12 January 2004 | From Studio Briefing | See recent Studio Briefing news

More people watched television on Saturday than any earlier day of the week -- a day most TV networks have written off as forsaken. What drew them was the overrun of the NFC Playoff game on Fox at 8:00 p.m. and the AFC Playoff on CBS from 8:15 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. The Fox half-hour produced a whopping 19.4 rating and a 30 share, while CBS averaged a 17.3/27. Fox was even able to hold a significant part of its football audience for Cops at 8:30 p.m., which scored a season high of 7.4/12. Football continued to dominate on Sunday, with the final half of the NFC Divisional Game scoring a 26.0/37 on Fox between 7:00 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.
