Director: Michael Mann Stars: Christian Bale, Johnny Depp (Full Cast) Studio: Universal Pictures The Plot: FBI agent Melvin Purvis (Bale) sets his sights on American gangster John Dillinger (Depp) and others in an attempt to curb a rampant Chicago crime spree during the 1930s.
THE BUZZ: Gangster junkies rejoice! Not since Tony Soprano went bada-boom, bada-bye-bye have fans of the crime genre had a reason to get so excited. Bale and Depp teaming up with Mann to tell one of the most famous 1930s gangland tales has easily created one of the most anticipated movies of the year and will probably generate enough fireworks for you to skip out on that picnic this weekend and catch a matinee. Director: Carlos Saldanha Mike Thurmeier Stars: Ray Romano, John Leguizamo, Denis Leary (Full Cast) Studio: Twentieth Century-Fox Film Corporation The Plot: When Sid gets into some trouble, it's up to Manny, Ellie, Diego, and Scrat to save their friend. Their mission leads them to an underground world where encounter dinosaurs, flora, and fauna -- as well as a one-eyed, dino-hunting weasel named Buck.
THE BUZZ: Animation studio Blue Sky might just fulfill their promise to help Twentieth Century Fox bring Pixar-level quality to family audiences this year, as they look to resuscitate this franchise after the touchy, feely, Dr. Phil-y Ice Age: The Meltdown. (Admittedly, we are more primed for their other 2009 offering, Wes Anderson's The Fantastic Mr. Fox.) With just the teaser trailer and other shreds of evidence available, we say prepare for Scrat, and his new lady companion, to be positioned a bit toward the front and center, delivering true entertainment while they possibly distract from the revisionist history taking place. Director: Nia Vardalos Stars: Nia Vardalos, John Corbett, Judah Friedlander (Full Cast) Studio: IFC Films The Plot: A florist (Vardalos) tries to convince a restaurant owner (Corbett) to date her without the fear of it becoming a full-fledged relationship.
THE BUZZ: It's not surprising that Nia Vardalos and John Corbett are reuniting for an indie romantic comedy, especially as their respective stars are in position to recapture the shine they had at the beginning of the decade. (Vardalos is fingers-crossed for a summer hit with My Life in Ruins and Corbett is double-crossies for a role in the Sex and the City sequel.) Director: Larry Charles Stars: Sacha Baron Cohen (Full Cast) Studio: Universal Pictures The Plot: Flamboyant Austrian fashion reporter Bruno (Cohen) travels the world in search of the latest style trends.
THE BUZZ: Diss all you want about Cohen's lesser-than-Borat creation from "Da Ali G Show," but we can't get enough of the Bruno sightings: from fashion runways and cage fights to baggage claim carousels and political rallies. Director: Chris Columbus Stars: Hayden Panettiere, Paul Rust (Full Cast) Studio: Twentieth Century-Fox Film Corporation The Plot: The last night of high school takes an unexpected turn after geeky grad Denis Cooverman declares his love for hottie cheerleader Beth Cooper in his valedictorian speech.
THE BUZZ: We're just as surprised as you that Michael Cera's not in this. No McLovin' either. And, while this would've been the perfect material for John Hughes to stage his comeback, familiar '80s filmmaker Colombus will totally give this the right retro teen feel. For those unfamiliar with lead dweeb Paul Rust, YouTube him. He's no stranger to the sketch-comedy world. Message Boards: Unfortunately, I cried in the ending | The Director of Home Alone did this? Director: Chris Nahon Stars: Gianna Jun, Allison Miller (Full Cast) Studio: Samuel Goldwyn Films The Plot: A vampire named Saya, who is part of covert government agency that hunts and destroys demons in a post-WWII Japan, is inserted in a military school to discover which one of her classmates is a demon is disguise.
THE BUZZ: Give me female fighters and swords over Shia and Hasbro anyday. I think this import would work well sandwiched between showings of Night Watch and The Heroic Trio. Director: Jeffrey Levy-Hinte Stars: Muhammad Ali, James Brown, Don King (Full Cast) Studio: Sony Pictures Classics The Plot: A documentary on the legendary soul music concert staged in Kinshasa, Zaire in 1974, which was staged to compliment the Rumble in the Jungle, the rematch between boxers Muhammad Ali and George Foreman.
THE BUZZ: No offense to hardworking documentarians, but Soul Power and The Cove are the only documentaries we have on our radar ... until The September Issue comes out this fall. We're also primed for the debut of indie super-producer Jeffrey Levy-Hinte, even if he did just use a lot of cut-out footage from When We Were Kings, the Oscar-winning doc Levy-Hinte edited over 10 years ago (!). Director: Lynn Shelton Stars: Mark Duplass, Joshua Leonard, Alycia Delmore (Full Cast) Studio: Magnolia Pictures The Plot: Andrew (Leonard) reunites with Ben (Duplass), his college pal who has become, in Andrew's mind, too domesticated. Offering him an alternative, the two guys hit a party at a sex-positive commune, where they are inspired to consider taking on a boundary-pushing art project: a gay sex film, starring them both.
THE BUZZ: This may be your last chance to not see a Mark Duplass film, since he and the rest of his Mumblecore compatriots are going major (studio) league, which should inevitably cause a spike in the DVD rentals of Hannah Takes the Stairs, Baghead, etc. Meanwhile, I am wondering if Lynn Shelton, Humpday's director and star, will allow her road to diverge into Hollywood, or if she will align herself with the Kelly Reichardts of the movie-making world. Ummm, not that those are her only options, though. Also, is this indie counterprogramming to Brüno? Message Boards: 'You're not as caroacks(sp?) as you think you are | Why didn't they get drunk? Director: David Yates Stars: Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint (Full Cast) Studio: Warner Bros. Pictures The Plot: In his sixth year at Hogwarts, Harry Potter discovers even more about the evil Lord Voldemort's past, thanks to his mentor Dumbledore and mysterious textbook marked "This book is the property of the Half-Blood Prince." By the end of the year, nothing will ever be the same.
THE BUZZ: Director David Yates is again at the helm for this sixth film, which if the book is any indication, trods into decidedly grown-up territory -- we have left Bertie Bott's Every Flavor Beans far behind. Good news: screenwriter Steve Kloves is back, and the newest high profile cast additions include Jim Broadbent as professor Horace Slughorn) and Helen McCrory as Draco's nefarious mum. (Don't know her? She was Cherie Blair in The Queen) The bad news? You will probably need a hug by the time the credits roll -- darkness, death and despair loom highly for our hero. Director: Marc Webb Stars: Zooey Deschanel, Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Full Cast) Studio: Fox Searchlight Pictures The Plot: Greeting-card writer Tom (Gordon-Leavitt), falls for his new colleague, Summer (Deschanel), on her first day of work. What comes next is a look at the subsequent year-and-a-half period the two lovers spend together.
THE BUZZ: Music-video director Marc Webb makes like Spike Jonze and others before him by splashing into the feature-film world with his debut, a musical, sprawling, potentially heartbreaking affair that earned a "Best Film at Sundance" label from many a reviewer. Look for offbeat specialists Fox Searchlight to keep this anti-romance delivering the truth about love throughout the summer and fall. Director: Morgan J. Freeman Stars: Mischa Barton, Matt Long, Jessica Stroup (Full Cast) Studio: Paper Street Films The Plot: College football player Mike Donaldson returns to his hometown for Christmas break with his new girlfriend (Stroup), a surprise for the locals -- especially his ex, Shelby (Barton), who still pines for a relationship with Mike. A dangerous game of cat and mouse ensues between the two young women.
THE BUZZ: While this clearly looks like Misery meets Fatal Attraction, riding on the coattails of Obsessed's success, I ask: What's wrong with that? Especially if you, say, pretend that Marissa Cooper never died -- she just washed ashore in a small town and started dating the local football hero. Sorry, Mischa, but just like your character here, you cannot escape your past. Message Boards: Spoilers about Elizabeth's toes | Question about Shelby's mom? Director: Hoyt Yeatman Stars: Will Arnett, Penélope Cruz, Zach Galifianakis (Full Cast) Studio: Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures The Plot: A specially trained squad of guinea pigs is dispatched to stop a diabolical billionaire from taking over the world.
THE BUZZ: Guinea pigs are this year's chihuahua, at least on the Disney lot. Truthfully, while I am not moved by such movies, there are much worse ways to spend 90 minutes with your kids. But I do wish the creative minds here rethought the idea of making animals appear "sexy." And it's interesting to note the normally filthy tongued Will Arnett is the main face here. Director: Robert Luketic Stars: Katherine Heigl, Gerard Butler (Full Cast) Studio: Columbia Pictures The Plot: A macho morning TV show correspondent (Butler) makes a bet with his love-challenged producer (Heigl): If his tips on how to land and keep a guy don't work, he'll quit the business. But while he coaches her through a fledgling romance, can he avoid falling for her, and vice versa?
THE BUZZ: Hmm, if anyone out there really wants to go see a super-formulaic romance that turns two likable actors into two icky characters, let me know if you truly enjoyed The Ugly Truth, whose plot is more schematic than Heigl and Butler's planned career trajectories. I'll be one theater over, watching something slightly more tolerable, like the movie version of a Disney TV show, or an ill-advised sequel. Director: Jaume Collet-Serra Stars: Vera Farmiga, Peter Sarsgaard, Isabelle Fuhrman (Full Cast) Studio: Warner Bros. Pictures The Plot: After their unborn baby dies, Kate and John Coleman (Farmiga and Sarsgaard) decide to adopt a child as a hopeful way to bring some joy and normalcy into their lives. Esther (Fuhrman), a 9-year-old orphan, captivates the couple, and comes home to live with them, though a strange sequence of events follows Esther's arrival, who's angelic façade might mask sinister intentions.
THE BUZZ: Sigh. Another creepy-kid frightener ... released in July ... starring Vera Farmiga. No offense to the unintentionally campy Joshua, but you'd think Warner Bros. might have opted for a different release angle with this one, the third film from ho-hum director Jaume Collet-Serra (House of Wax). Plus, select audiences have already risen up against the picture. Message Boards: Prostitute / Pedophiles? | Best twist ending? Director: John Hindman Stars: Jeff Daniels, Lauren Graham, Lou Taylor Pucci (Full Cast) Studio: Magnolia Pictures The Plot: A reclusive author of a well-known spiritual guidance book falls for a sensible chiropractor and learns some important life lessons as he begins to face the public and his past.
THE BUZZ: This one's been quietly charming film festival crowds since its debut at Sundance this year. Meanwhile, shouldn't a film featuring Lorelai Gilmore and a spiritual phony who talks to God stir up a bit more excitement and/or controversy than "quiet" and "charming"? Message Boards: I loved this movie | up until the last five minutes.... Showtimes | Trailers | Photos | Message Boards | User Comments | Reviews | |||||

Director: Jonas Pate Stars: Kevin Spacey, Mark Webber, Keke Palmer (Full Cast) Studio: Roadside Attractions The Plot: A tragedy sends LA's top celebrity shrink (Spacey) into a personal and professional funk. Gradually, his experiences with a pro-bono client might serve as his best prescription for happiness, as he begins to reconnect with those around him.
THE BUZZ: The last time Kevin Spacey tapped into drug-addled alienation, he won an Oscar. With Shrink, Spacey's performance has helped earn the film kind-to-decent notices on the festival circuit, but we're pretty certain this one will come and go quietly during the crowded summer schedule. We hear Mark Webber also successfully displays his wares, and, look, there's that Pell James again. And there's something about Keke Palmer, who here plays the aforementioned pro-bono case, that's undeniably compelling. Director: Armando Iannucci Stars: Tom Hollander, Peter Capaldi, James Gandolfini (Full Cast) Studio: IFC Films The Plot: A comedy centered on an English government representative (Hollander) who accidently back the idea of a U.S.-led war in the Middle East, and the subsequent fallout on both sides of the Atlantic.
THE BUZZ: Best described as an extension of Armando Iannucci's BBC series, "The Thick of It," the reviews here have been strong, unlike the marketing effort, despite an ace trailer and tantalizing international cast. I think of this as a comedic antidote to the coldy received import State of Play. Director: Judd Apatow Stars: Adam Sandler, Seth Rogen, Leslie Mann (Full Cast) Studio: Universal Pictures The Plot: When seasoned comedian George Simmons (Sandler) learns of his terminal, inoperable health condition, his desire to form a genuine friendship inspires him to take a relatively green performer (Rogen) under his wing as his opening act.
THE BUZZ: With no Will Smith movie set for July 2009, Adam Sandler looks to rule the season with a comedy-drama (don't say "dramedy") that I'm hoping will feature his best performance since Punch-Drunk Love. Little bits of evidence here and there, such as the presence of Oscar-winning cinematographer Janusz Kaminski and a certain special event, have convinced me that Judd Apatow is looking to crack his mold and usher in a different kind of, ummmmm, masculine realness (?) for his third go-round behind the camera. Also, with Ms. Apatow and Sarah Silverman cast (in major and minor roles, respectively), maybe the director finally will learn how to fold actual-real funny women into a story. Director: John Schultz Stars: Ashley Tisdale, Robert Hoffman, Carter Jenkins (Full Cast) Studio: Twentieth Century-Fox Film Corporation The Plot: In Maine, a group of teenagers must protect their vacation home from the aliens who have taken over the top floor of the dwelling.
THE BUZZ: Whoa, it's like a family version of The Mist, with a screenplay by an acutal-real writer! And the most wildly divergent cast (in terms of demographics) we've seen in a while, what with two former "SNL" dudes, an HSM vet, Doris Roberts, and the boy from Step Up 2: The Streets. Does this mean we can expect some singing, dancing, and improv? We wish. Actually, the best thing this movie has going for itself: It's an entirely original story, no pressure to turn some Caldecott-winning kids' lit masterpiece into a potential franchise. THE BUZZ: "Quirky romantic comedy" alert! From the Sundance Class of 2009. Actually, this looks sincere and something to which any aging indie girl or boy can relate. Director: Louie Psihoyos Stars: Richard O'Barry (Full Cast) Studio: Lionsgate The Plot: Using state-of-the-art equipment, a group of activists, led by renown dolphin trainer Ric O'Barry, infiltrate a cove near Taijii, Japan to expose both a shocking instance of animal abuse and a serious threat to human health.
THE BUZZ: Louie Psihoyos's documentary stirred crowds at Sundance earlier this year, where it picked up the Audience Award during a year where the docs were particularly strong. It won the same award at the increasingly relevant Hot Docs festival in May. After you read this interview, you might see why this is -- no joke -- one of the most anticipated documentaries ever released to a wide audience. THE BUZZ: Horror fans are primed for Marcus Dunstan's directorial debut, after he and writing partner Patrick Melton have accrued a fanbase for their Feast saga and their contributions to the second-half of the Saw legacy. Too bad The Collector isn't getting the promotional push it seems to deserve, even if it turns out to be little more than a Chex Mix of horror and thriller set-ups. Director: Chan-wook Park Stars: Kang-ho Song, Ok-vin Kim (Full Cast) Studio: Focus Features The Plot: A failed medical experiment turns a man of faith into a vampire with a taste for more than just blood. Taking a lover, the couple's desires turn them into mass murderers.
THE BUZZ: We're going to credit the success of Let the Right One In as one of the reasons Focus Features has opted to give Chan-wook Park (Oldboy, Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance) perhaps his widest exposure in the U.S. to date. Yes, the movie itself was a hit in Park's native South Korea, and it did win a Jury Prize at Cannes this year, but LtROI has primed indie horror audiences for more alternatives to Bella and Edward.
