Forbes Determines Hollywood's Most Overpaid Actors
40 minutes ago | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »
Just the other day, I tackled the notion of whether A-List actors were becoming an endangered species. Now Forbes is adding to the celebrities woes with a list of Hollywood's 10 Most Overpaid Stars. Their criteria for the list: Look at the 100 biggest stars who have starred in at least 3 flicks opening in more than 500 theaters in the last 5 years, and calculate a return-on-investment by dividing total operating income on the 3 movies by the actor's total compensation (salaries and sales earnings).
So, who could possibly end up on such a list? Hazard a guess? Well, here are some hints. The 10-spot actor, who has the biggest earnings for his pay, earns an average of $8.62 for every $1 paid, while the worst offender skyrocketed to the #1 spot with a pretty big flop this year, earning only $3.29 for every buck paid. Some of the names in the middle are quite expected, especially Tom Cruise and Eddie Murphy, »

Oscar documentary scandal: The real reason too many good movies got left out
48 minutes ago | EW.com - The Movie Critics | See recent EW.com - The Movie Critics news »
The 15-film "short list" for this year's Best Documentary competition in the Academy Awards has provoked more than the usual shock and outrage, and for good reason. Every year, there's a certain level of white-noise griping about Oscar "snubs." This year's list, though, isn't just lackluster -- there's something fundamentally off about it. It's almost perverse. Compiled by a star chamber of Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences voters (it's not specified how many of the 151 documentary branch members actually watch the films and produce the final roster), the list omits far too many of the documentaries -- like, »

Oprah Winfrey: is she irreplaceable in daytime?
54 minutes ago | EW - Hollywood Insider.com | See recent EW.com - Hollywood Insider news »
Now that Oprah Winfrey has made it official that she's ending her talk show in September 2011, the focus now turns to those 215 stations that aired the Queen of Daytime and how they'll attempt to retain the 7 million-plus viewers who tune into Winfrey every day. Speculation is already rampant that Winfrey could groom a successor on her show (she's already responsible for the launches of Dr. Oz and Dr. Phil) but it seems more likely that she'll make a quick getaway from CBS Television, which syndicated her show, and the ABC- and Hearst-owned stations that aired her and leave the companies to fend for themselves. »

Judd Apatow Says 'Pineapple Express 2' Likely, 'Superbad 2' Not So Much
54 minutes ago | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »
Looking for a sequel to the hit summer comedy "Superbad"? Don’t expect to get one anytime soon. The genius producer behind the film, Judd Apatow, revealed as much when he sat down to talk shop with his fans on Funny or Die yesterday. While "Pineapple Express 2" looks like it may hit theaters at some point in the foreseeable future, "Superbad" won’t be getting a sequel.
(Editor's note: I would have embedded the video here, but Judd Apatow is a profane man and the words he uses are too much for members of our reading audience. I welcome you to track it down on the great ship Internets.)
“I can't get [Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg] to make the ‘Superbad’ sequel. I begged, but they don't want to ruin it. They think it's a gem of a movie and they don't want a crappy second," Judd said. He later stated, "There's »

Brandon Routh and Martha MacIsaac Exploit Twilight’s Menstruation Loophole for Comedy
1 hour ago | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »
It’s unnecessary to poke fun at Twilight and The Twilight Saga: New Moon because both films are funny (albeit unintentionally) enough on their own. However, parody of these silly movies is always appreciated. Earlier this week, Conan O’Brien had a very special message for parents as he warned them of some of the risqué behavior in New Moon.
Today, Brandon Routh (Superman Returns) and Martha MacIsaac (Superbad) have a goddamn hilarious send-up of an overlooked question of the Twilight series as well as other vampire-human romance stories: wouldn’t menstrual blood drive vampires insane? And how could you keep your dumb romance alive if your vamp boyfriend literally wanted to kill you during your period? The painfully hilarious answers to these questions are after the jump.

Netflix and IFC Team Up for Streaming Indies
1 hour ago | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »
Netflix knows where it's at when it comes to the rental biz; more and more, folks want to stay at home and watch movies instantly. We don't even want to wait for those happy little red envelopes any more. Nope, if it's not on our Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, or computer, we get all squirrelly. (Okay, maybe that last part is just me.) And IFC is also on the cutting edge of home entertainment in its steadily growing on-demand offerings, including their IFC Festival Direct program, where you can watch a selection of movies that have played during recent festivals, and the In Theaters + On Demand program, which offers at-home viewers the chance to see indie flicks the same day they premiere in what's usually limited release.
Now Netflix and IFC have sealed the deal for a partnership that gives Netflix access to 53 IFC releases to be streamed online to whichever platform you like, »

In the eleventh installment of Oscar Talk, In Contention‘s Kris Tapley and I have a go at last weekend’s Governors Awards, Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds, the documentary short list and Hal Holbrook’s performance in That Evening Sun. Over at Awards Daily, Sasha Stone assembles a bigger group to grapple with some of these and other questions. On the jump, I’ve pasted Stone’s useful breakdown of the different branches of the Academy. You can see how dramatically the actors branch dominates. Want to predict the Oscars correctly? Figure out how each of those branches will vote for the contenders. The producers, executives and publicists tend to be … »
Season of the Witch Movie Trailer
1 hour ago | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »
Last month, Lionsgate released a special 30-second Halloween teaser trailer for Dominic Sena's supernatural thriller Season of the Witch which had us scratching our heads. Sena is best known as the director of fun but disposable action films like Gone in Sixty Seconds, Swordfish and the recent comic book adaptation Whiteout, and I had heard great things about Brian Schut's script... But the teaser looked like a direct-to-dvd Dark Castle production. The new trailer gives us a much better idea of what to expect, and somewhat raised expectations. Watch the trailer for yourself after the jump, and leave your thoughts in the comments below. The film stars Nicolas Cage as a 14th century Crusader who returns with his comrade (Ron Perlman) to a homeland devastated by the Black Plague. 'New Moon' Director Chris Weitz Wants You To Keep Quiet About The Ending

From MTV.Com: Fans pretty much know what they are getting themselves into when they head to theaters to see "New Moon" this weekend. If they have read the book, they have a good idea of how this part of the "Twilight Saga" comes to an end.
Still, director Chris Weitz hopes fans appreciate the way he has decided to craft the "New Moon" finale for the big screen.
"The final scene is extraordinarily emotional, and it leads to a very potent climax," he told MTV News on the red carpet of the NYC screening of "New Moon." "And it's kind of a spoiler, which I hope people won't give away."

Oprah Winfrey: The Next 19 Months Of Goodbye
1 hour ago | Movieline | See recent Movieline news »
Today, a sucker-punched nation mourns as the news that Oprah Winfrey, the closest thing we have to the Lord Himself taking daytime TV host form and spreading love and goodness through America's broadcast airwaves, will end her syndicated, culture-changing talk show in May of 2011, giving stunned fans a mere 19 months to come to grips with this life-altering upheaval. To help those abandoned viewers better cope with this long goodbye, Movieline now dusts off its crystal ball (purchased following Oprah's Favorite Things recommendation of 2005, during her brief, bizarre fling with gypsy mysticism) and looks at what the next year and a half will hold for the big O and her show: »

Trailer for Season Of The Witch Starring Nicolas Cage and Ron Perlman
1 hour ago | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »
I didn’t really understand what Season of the Witch was about beyond being a test case for the credulity of a Nicolas Cage hairpiece. Now that the first full trailer for the film has appeared online, it looks like 3:10 to Yuma but instead of a posse being besieged by bandits while trying to take an outlaw to a train station, this movie is about a band of warriors besieged by the forces of hell while trying to take a witch to an abbey. But if you ignore the Rob Zombie music, the dull color palette, and failed attempts at creepy imagery, you still have Ron Perlman kicking ass and getting billed alongside Nicolas Cage and that’s why you should check out this trailer after the jump.
Season of the Witch hits theaters on March 19, 2010.

Oprah's Leap From Series To Network Should Inspire These Five Shows To Follow Her Lead
1 hour ago | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »
The Queen of Daytime Television is dethroning herself. On September 9, 2011, Oprah Winfrey will take her last bow as the host of the Oprah Winfrey Show, almost 25 years to the day since the program initially launched.
But Oprah's televised days are far from over, as the media mogul plans on launching the Oprah Winfrey Network — appropriately abbreviated as Own — in early 2011. Once her show ends, she'll focus much of her energy on the brand new network.
Honestly, it's a pretty brilliant career move. In fact, it's one that several television franchises could probably follow with great success — or, at least, hilarious results. Following Oprah's move from television host to network overlord, I think these five franchises could take a similar leap from series to channel.

The Twilight Saga: New Moon Destroys Harry Potter and Dark Knight at Midnight Box Office
1 hour ago | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »
Summit Entertainment has announced that The Twilight Saga: New Moon has broken box office records, earning over $26.27 million in midnight screenings from 3,514 theaters. This destroys the $22.2 million midnight record held by Harry Potter And The Half Blood Prince, and the previous second place, Christopher Nolan's Batman Begins sequel The Dark Knight, which earned $18.4 million in midnight earnings. Also, Summit's re-release of the original Twilight on Thursday night on 2,057 screens resulted in $1.3 million in ticket sales. But the real question is, what will New Moon's numbers look like at the end of the weekend? Here is a round up of predictions from the Box Office prognosticators around the web: Box Office Psychics: $114M Lee’s Movie Info: $111M Box Office.com: $110M Box Office Mojo (Derby): $98.4M »

Domestic Trailer for Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief
1 hour ago | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »
Earlier this week we brought you the international trailerfor the upcoming greek gods by way of Harry Potter action-adventure flick, Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief. While that trailer was good, the domestic trailer just went online and it is even better. It’s action heavy and I have to say that the action looks fantastic. This trailer give you the plot of the film (Percy Jackson discovers he’s a demigod and must retrieve the bolt of Zeus-played by Sean Muthafuckin Bean-in order to prevent a war), and it has me excited for the film. I’m not saying it’s the next Harry Potter or anything like that, but I certainly have more interest in the film after seeing this trailer than I did before, which is what a good trailer is supposed to do.

Michael Fassbender Goes From One Bronte To the Next
2 hours ago | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »
The Brontes are all the rage for adaptation right now. It's undoubtedly due to Edward and Bella bestowing their favor on Wuthering Heights, and had they chosen Great Expectations, perhaps we'd see Dickens adaptations flinging themselves to the big screen. I love corsets and cravats, so I'm not going to complain, and I'm certainly not going to whine if Cary Fukunaga gets this cast for Jane Eyre. Variety is reporting that Michael Fassbender and Mia Wasikowska are in talks to play Jane and Rochester for Fukunaga, and oh, how torrid it would be!
This is actually the second time Fassbender has circled a Bronte adaptation. Last May, he was said to be in talks for Wuthering Heights, but Ed Westwick stepped into that particular waistcoat. It's a shame. I think Fassbender would have made an excellent Heathcliff, and may have been the first one to actually snarl, bang his head against a tree, »

Mia Wasikowska and Michael Fassbender Team Up For New Jane Eyre Adaptation
2 hours ago | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »
Mia Wasikowska (Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland) and Michael Fassbender (Inglourious Basterds) seem to be on their way to becoming two of the biggest rising stars out there right now. Both actors are now teaming up with director Cary Fukunaga (Sin Nombre) in bringing another adaption of the classic novel Jane Eyre to the big screen. I don’t know if anyone was really hoping for another one, but the talent involved definitely has me interested now. You can read the details after the jump.
Variety reports that the film will be a period piece and will play up the gothic elements of the story. Published in 1847, the classic novel tells the story of Jane (Wasikowska), a demure governess who discovers her surly employer Rochester (Fassbender) is harboring a dark secret. Ellen Page was once attached to the project to play the title role, but has since left the project. »

C4 documentary drama to portray the monarch in key moments since the 1950s
Playing the Queen brought Helen Mirren international fame and enough awards to fill a trophy room. Now five more British actors are taking on the role in a new Channel 4 documentary drama series.
The Queen, a five-part series starting next Sunday, focuses on crisis moments since the 1953 coronation. Emilia Fox stars in the first episode, centred around events in 1955 when Princess Margaret was considering marriage to a divorced equerry, Peter Townsend. Samantha Bond, best known as Miss Moneypenny in the Bond films, plays her during the early 1970s era of power cuts, strikes and Ira threats. Susan Jameson portrays her in conflict with Margaret Thatcher over the South Africa sanctions row that threatened the Commonwealth.
Barbara Flynn picks up the role during the "annus horribilis" of 1992, when Charles and Diana's failed marriage was laid bare in the »

'New Moon' Star Robert Pattinson To Be Joined By Uma Thurman In 'Bel Ami'
2 hours ago | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »
From MTV.Com: As soon as Robert Pattinson loses one high-profile leading lady, he gains another one for his upcoming film "Bel Ami." Of course, Nicole Kidman was never officially booked for the movie — an offer went out, but a deal was never solidified — but now everyone's favorite "Twilight" vampire is set to star opposite Uma Thurman in the picture, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
"Bel Ami" is an adaptation of 19th-century French writer Guy de Maupassant's short story of the same name. The plot follows Georges Duroy (Pattinson), a Parisian journalist and notorious ladies' man who overcomes a poverty-stricken childhood to become one of the city's foremost movers and shakers. Thurman is set to play the wife of Duroy's friend who eventually marries him after assisting in his personal and professional rise in French society.

Late Night Highlights: Tattoos, Taylor Lautner and Ted Danson's Tears

There comes a time in life when we have to face our personal truths and after another dark night of the soul watching late night television, I'm ready to admit that I love Lopez Tonight. The new TBS talk show had me during Wednesday night's Chola Makeover, but last night's show clinched my affection when the host advised an inter-racial couple in the audience on their money disagreements, threw to "Creepy Little White Girl," a new correspondent who delivers stale monologue jokes in zombie attire, got Ted Danson to admit that he cried while watching the Cheers pilot and then welcomed This Is It guitar goddess, Orianthi, to the stage for a solo performance.
