David Archuleta, who was thought to be a sure bet to win last season's American Idol -- but came in second to David Cook -- may be beating Cook where it counts -- in record sales. Billboard magazine has placed Archuleta's debut single "Crush" in second place on its Hot 100 singles chart. That bested the third-place debut of Cook's "The Time of My Life" in June. The trade publication observed that "Crush" marked the biggest bow by an Idol contestant for a song never performed on the show. The two Davids are due to challenge one another again in November when their first album CDs are released.

In fact, the movement, aptly tagged Stand Up to Cancer, is a rare television fundraiser which will air simultaneously without any commercial interruption on TV networks ABC, CBS and NBC in September. The event has already gathered quite a number of Hollywood A-listers, including Meryl Streep, who most recently appeared in the musical film Mamma Mia. Other stars to grace the event include Charlize Theron, Jennifer Aniston, Salma Hayek, Sally field and sports celebrity Lance Armstrong.
“The support we've received from the creative community is remarkable,” producer for the show Laura Ziskin told Reuters. “My phone is constantly ringing with people asking, 'What can I do and how can I help?' We hope viewers all over the country will do the same.”

What's harder – belting out hits on American Idol or singing the national anthem before an NBA playoff game? "The nerves are way worse [than on Idol]," David Cook told reporters moments before his Tuesday night rendition of the Star Spangled Banner. "It's the one song you don't want to mess up. I'm going to try not to notice Jack Nicholson sitting in the front row and think about the lyrics." The only saving grace about his performance before game three of the Celtics-Lakers NBA championship series? "No matter what I do, I don't have Simon [Cowell] telling me how dreadful it was," the 25-year-old joked.

American Idol runner-up David Archuleta is set to release an album later this year after signing a major record deal - even though he failed to win the U.S. TV show.
Archuleta was widely tipped to come out triumphant on the TV talent competition, but he eventually lost by a landslide 12 million votes to opponent David Cook in the final episode last month.
The 17-year-old's contract with 19 Recordings/Jive Records mirrors the paths of former 'Idol' stars Chris Daughtry, Jennifer Hudson and Clay Aiken, who all lost in past seasons but have successfully launched careers in the film, music and theatre arenas.
In a statement released Thursday, series creator Simon Fuller says: "It was fascinating to watch David's journey through 'Idol'. He is a genuine pop star, and is a gifted singer."
Daughtry managed to achieve the best-selling album in the U.S. in 2007, while Hudson won a Best Supporting Actress Oscar in the same year for her role in Dreamgirls. Aiken finished a four-month stint on Broadway last month playing Sir Robin in Monty Python's Spamalot.

It's the 'Cougars for Cook.'" "In fact, my friend, who's my age, is here," Vieira, 54, continued. "I'm not going to rat her out and say her name. [But she said] 'Should I be embarrassed?' I said, 'No, look at him!'"Cook soaked up the adoration with a

After being declared the champ by American Idol judges on Tuesday night, 17-year-old David Archuleta saw voting viewers take the title away from him on Wednesday and award it to 25-year-old David Cook. The show's judges on Tuesday were joined by several talk-show hosts, entertainment magazine commentators, and newspaper columnists in forecasting a win for the teenager. When host Ryan Seacrest announced on the show Wednesday night that the final vote was not even close -- 56 percent to 44 percent -- much of the audience appeared to believe that Archuleta was the big winner. Then, just before the announcement, judge Simon Cowell, who had praised Archuleta the previous night by saying that he had "won by a knockout," told Cook that he was sorry that his words verged on the "disrespectful" to him. Cowell said that when he watched the show at home, "it wasn't quite so clear cut as we called it." Seacrest said that a record 97.5 million votes had been cast by viewers, with Cook winning by a margin of 12 million.

Tonight's (Wednesday) season finale of American Idol is likely to produce the year's top ratings for a regular series, when viewers learn the results of the David vs. David showdown on Tuesday night. If the show's judges had the final say, the winner would be 17-year-old David Archuleta. Simon Cowell proclaimed, "What we have witnessed is a knockout." Randy Jackson called Archuleta "the best singer of season seven." His rival, David Cook, appeared to acknowledge that he would take the runner-up spot when the public's vote is counted. "Archie is an amazing, amazing kid and an amazing, amazing performer and I knew I had to come out with my A-game. I feel like I had fun," the Associated Press quoted him as saying. But Courtney Hazlett, who writes Msnbc.com's "The Scoop" gossip column said that producers of the show are actually rooting for Cook because they are concerned about having to deal with Archuleta's father, Jeff. "His father is another shade of Joe Simpson, and it can only spell disaster," a source told the column.

Jeff Archuleta, who has been banished from backstage at American Idol tapings for behaving like the male equivalent of a "stage mother," in his relationship with his son, finalist David Archuleta, continued to bark orders to his son from his seat in the audience during a taping of the show last Wednesday, the New York Post reported today (Friday). According to the newspaper, following a coin toss to determine whether David or fellow finalist David Cook would perform first during the final show next week, the elder Archuleta stood on his seat and screamed to his son, "Second! Second!" The Post observed that the contestant who gets to close the Idol show usually has an advantage.

Seventeen-year-old David Archuleta and 25-year-old David Cook are the last two contestants still standing following the elimination of 21-year-old Syesha Mercado from the American Idol finals Wednesday night. The final contest is set to take place next Tuesday, with the winner to be announced the following night. Ratings for the show continued to show significant erosion from a year ago as it posted a rating of 15.5 and a 23 share, representing 26.4 million viewers. Earlier in the evening the contest between contests on CBS and NBC ended in a virtual draw as Cbs's The Price Is Right Million Dollar Spectacular attracted 7.00 million viewers, while the first hour of Nbc's Deal or No Deal drew 7.08 million. At 9:00, CBS pulled solid numbers with Criminal Minds opposite Idol, corralling 12.6 million viewers.
