We start the Top 7. You finish the Top 10.
With Whip It swirling its way into theaters, it’s a wonder no one has fully acknowledged the absolutely amazing athletic work these brave actresses have put into the final product. Let’s face it, not all actors can “bring it” when it comes to believably portraying a real-life athlete.
Truth of the matter is, it’s about as rare a feat as you’re likely to see capably pulled off in Hollywood. Ellen Page (who will more than likely make a later edition of this list) made frantically scuttering around a cylindrical death-track look effortless, even graceful. Hell, the entire cast made roller derby look like the ballet with brute violence. This got me to thinking – Which other Hollywood actors have been the most convincing athletes on the big screen? They deserve their due (to go along with their millions of »

The Wire creator David Simon is developing a new series at HBO set in New Orleans titled Treme.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the size of the series order is still being determined, with the network eyeing a fall debut.
Treme is a post-Katrina-themed drama that chronicles the rebuilding of New Orleans through the eyes of local musicians.
Simon co-created the project with longtime New Orleans resident Eric Overmyer, after the two former Homicide writers had discussed doing a show set in the Big Easy for years.
"New Orleans is one of the most unique and essential American places, which is also very vulnerable," Simon said.
The Treme cast is led by another New Orleans native, Wendell Pierce, and includes Steve Zahn, Clarke Peters, Khandi Alexander, Melissa Leo, Kim Dickens and Rob Brown.
The series will continue to be filmed in the Crescent City, where the pilot was shot. »

Blu-Ray Rating: 3.5/5.0 Chicago – There’s nothing surprising about “The Express”. It’s a true story that hits all of the beats that you would expect it to for an inspirational sports movie. A big game, a bad injury, and the will to overcome extreme adversity - these are the staples of the genre.
Of course, this means that success or failure for a film like “The Express” comes down to execution. Gary Fleder’s film is far from perfect - it goes on about half an hour too long and has a miscast lead - but the true story is powerful and the always-great Dennis Quaid adds gravity to the ensemble.
The Express was released by Universal Home Video on January 20th, 2009.

For me, sports movies tend to be more entertaining than the games themselves. You get to really care about the people involved, so there’s an emotional investment that I can’t have for many athletes. And it’s hard not to root for Ernie Davis in The Express. He’s a young black man dealing with not only being a great football player but a culture that was not too shy about its racism. Ernie (Rob Brown) grows up to be a great runner, and is recruited by Ben Schwartzwalder (Dennis Quaid) and Jim Brown (Darrin Dewitt Henson) to go to Syracuse, and to follow in Brown’s footsteps. He plays, but when they play well, they often have to face crowds that hate Ernie for being black, and throw bottles and other things at the team. When the film deals with this, it’s unfortunately on the nose. »

I know the rule is to not judge something by its cover, but we all do it -- you can't help but do it -- and movie studios wouldn't make posters and trailers if they didn't want audiences to get some kind of an idea of what they were in for before the movie started. When it came to Universal's The Express I not only assumed it would be just another generic sports flick, but I also just can't get passed that ugly artwork. Sorry, I can't stand watching the Cleveland Browns because of those ugly jerseys and the Syracuse Orangemen aren't much better. My favorite college basketball team is the North Carolina Tar Heels and I may be the only one that started liking them because I thought their jerseys were cool and not because of Michael Jordan. Of course names such as Jerry Stackhouse and Rasheed Wallace playing »
