Review: Body of Lies

10 October 2008 8:03 AM, PDT | From Cinematical.com | See recent Cinematical news

I found myself asking one simple question during Ridley Scott's Body of Lies, a well-shot, big-name intelligence thriller that sees Leonardo DiCaprio's CIA man caught up in action in the Middle East -- namely, what is Body of Lies for? I don't mean that in the sense of asking what it supports or believes in -- although, with the film's mix of Hollywood heroics and sneering cynicism, you're certainly left with that question -- but rather in the sense of asking what it is that Body of Lies means to accomplish or communicate. Part of the film feels like an attempt at a sprawling, globe-trotting story of realpolitik and moral complexity, in the mold of Syriana or Scott's own Black Hawk Down; other parts feel like Dolby-pumped slam-bang action, in the mold of Tony Scott's Spy Game or the Bourne Films. And some of Body of Lies feels like a weird,

Movie Review - 'Body of Lies'

Body of Lies

Starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Russell Crowe, and Mark Strong

Directed by Ridley Scott

Rated R

The first time I remember seeing somewhat believable spy satellites in movies was Enemy of the State, directed by Tony Scott. Now his older and more revered brother, Ridley, uses a more believable variation of that technology to follow CIA agent Roger Ferris (Leonardo DiCaprio) through scorching equatorial deserts in Body of Lies. Ironically, in the first film, the spying is to know too much, while in Body of Lies, too little is known in spite of it.

The film is based on a novel by David Ignatius - adapted for the screen by The Departed screenwriter William Monahan - about a search for a high-ranking terrorist that involves the incompatible methods of the intelligence communities of the United States and Jordan.

Ferris is on the ground doing the dirty work of Ed

Melissa Leo boards ‘Welcome to the Rileys’

2 October 2008 5:13 AM, PDT | From screeninglog.com | See recent screeninglog news

Actress Melissa Leo has joined James Gandolfini and Kristen Stewart in Jake Scott’s indie drama “Welcome to the Rileys,” according to Variety.

The trade says the story revolves around a couple (Gandolfini, Leo) driven apart by the death of their daughter but brought back together when they meet a troubled young woman (Stewart).

Scott is directing a script by Ken Hixon, writer of “City by the Sea.” “Rileys” heads into production this month.

Leo most recently starred in “Frozen River” and “Righteous Kill.” She’s currently filming Jake Goldberger’s “Don McKay,” about a man (Thomas Haden Church) who returns to his hometown only to find his long-lost love on the verge of death.

Stewart will next be seen in Catherine Hardwicke’s anticipated vampire romance “Twilight.” As for Gandolfini, watch out for him in Tony Scott’s remake of “The Taking of Pelham 123.”

Eagle Eye co-writers working on a Blade Runner sequel??

29 September 2008 1:22 PM, PDT | From QuietEarth.us | See recent QuietEarth news

Well, that's what /Film is reporting anyway. The gang apparently got an email from a regular reader who had just been in attendance at a Creative Screenwriting Q&A session with Eagle Eye co-scribes Travis Wright and John Glenn. The email states that Wright revealed to the crowd that the two had been working on sequel treatments for sometime and that Bud Yorkin (who was one of the original executive producers on Blade Runner) was even involved. He also claimed to have already been working with studio pre-viz teams! The obvious question of course is; is there a Ridley Scott connection? Well, even though there's been no report of Ridley's involvement, or even interest, in a sequel to Blade Runnner, Wright and Penn were at one point hired to write a remake of The Warriors for his brother Tony Scott so, as /Film notes, the connection might be there under the surface.

Ack! They're Making 'Blade Runner 2'!?

29 September 2008 1:22 PM, PDT | From Cinematical.com | See recent Cinematical news

Wait, stop -- don't throw yourself out that window just yet! It may or may not be as bad as it looks/sounds. According to Slashfilm, one of their readers attended a Q&A session with one of the writers of Eagle Eye, which was hosted by Creative Screenwriting magazine. During said Q&A, the writer, Travis Wright, said that he and his partner John Glenn were working through "various treatments for a Blade Runner sequel over the last couple years." Apparently, they've been working alongside Blade Runner co-executive producer Bud Yorkin, and all of this has been done outside the studio system -- meaning this is in no way a done deal, only that these writers are trying to put together their best package in the hopes a studio will bite.

As of right now, Ridley Scott is nowhere near the project (although both guys are working on a

Washington to read 'Book of Eli'

5 September 2008 10:43 AM, PDT | From The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news

Denzel Washington has signed on the dotted line to star in the Hughes brothers' new film, the post-apocalyptic drama Book Of Eli.

The movie, which Warner Brothers will distribute, revolves around a lone hero, played by Washington, in a not-too-distant apocalyptic future who must fight across America to bring society the knowledge that could be the key to its redemption.

This is a Joel Silver movie, the guy responsible, most recently for producing Guy Ritchie's new film Rocknrolla. His other features include The Matrix trilogy and Demolition Man.

Washington has just wrapped the remake of The Taking Of Pelham 123 alongside John Travolta. That film is directed by Tony Scott and hits theaters in 2009.

Who is the Most Overrated Director?

28 August 2008 1:48 PM, PDT | From Rope Of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news

From left to right: Quentin Tarantino, M. Night Shyamalan, Kevin Smith, Oliver Stone, Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, Brian De Palma, Ethan and Joel Coen, Ron Howard and Martin Scorsese In search of an idea for another top ten list I got to thinking about directors. Who is the best director? Who is the worst director? Those two questions require some serious research and I just don't think I am learned enough to say one way or another. Then I got to thinking about who may be the most overrated director? The best thing about this question is that it eliminates the likes of Uwe Boll from the conversation and I don't need to regurgitate what so many others have said concerning the directors that have gone down in history as great. I don't have to worry about telling you how great Alfred Hitchcock is and why. It's fantastic. However I

Movie Trailer - 'Body of Lies' with DiCaprio and Crowe

17 July 2008 11:45 AM, PDT | From GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news

You know who shouldn't be allowed to use a southern accent? Russell Crowe. He got an Oscar nomination for A Beautiful Mind, which was a bad accent, and it's on proud display again in the new trailer for Body of Lies.

This trailer, of course, is one of the three hitting screens with The Dark Knight this weekend, along with Watchmen and Terminator Salvation. We had the Terminator teaser for you yesterday, and Watchmen...well, I guess they're holding on to that one for now.

I like a lot of the parts in Body of Lies, but I don't much love the trailer. It's a Ridley Scott movie, although this feels like a trailer for a Tony Scott movie (and I even like Tony...just not as much as his brother). The script is from Departed writer William Monahan. Leonardo DiCaprio is great, as we know, and Crowe can be

Kilmer is playing Cage’s partner, while Xzibit will star as one of the film’s villains. Herzog is directing a script by Billy Finkelstein.
