Watchmen—The Ultimate Cut (Warner Bros.) Director Zack Snyder’s film of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ landmark graphic novel is as worthy an adaptation of a great book that has ever been filmed. In an alternative version of the year 1985, Richard Nixon is serving his third term as President and super heroes have been outlawed by a congressional act, in spite of the fact that two of the most high-profile “masks,” Dr. Manhattan (Billy Cruddup) and The Comedian (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) helped the U.S. win the Vietnam War. When The Comedian is found murdered, many former heroes become concerned that a conspiracy is afoot to assassinate retired costumed crime fighters. Former masks Nite Owl (Patrick Wilson), Silk Spectre (Malin Akerman) and still-operating Rorschach (Jackie Earle Haley, in an Oscar-worthy turn) launch an investigation of their own, all while the Pentagon’s “Doomsday »

Sophie Okonedo in Skin Winner of four audience awards, including at the AFI Dallas and Santa Barbara film festivals, Skin tells the factually inspired (and quite curious) story of Sandra Laing (Hotel Rwanda’s Academy Award nominee Sophie Okonedo as an adult; Ella Ramangwane as child), the "black" daughter of "white" Afrikaner parents (veterans Sam Neill and Alice Krige), who until then — South Africa in the 1950s — had been unaware that they must have had some black ancestors. Though raised as a white girl by her parents, Sandra soon discovers the importance of her skin color after she’s officially reclassified as black and is expelled from her school. Her parents then fight a judicial battle to have their [...] »

The corrosive legacy of South Africa's apartheid system is still being felt, 15 years after that country's first free elections and its move to majority rule. To get a sense of just how deep the lingering effects of institutionalized racism must run, take yourself to Anthony Fabian's Skin, a powerful and compelling drama based on a true story that still resonates. It opens Friday (10.30.09) in limited release. The film looks at the life of Sandra Laing (played by Sophie Okonedo as a teen and adult, Ella Ramangwane as a child), a black-looking child born to white parents in South Africa in the mid-1950s. Though her parents, Abraham and Sannie (Sam Neill, Alice Krige), are in denial as the film begins, it's apparent to anyone who sees Sandra that she is, to use the terms of apartheid, colored, meaning of mixed race... »

Fantasy films are a tough genre for any but the biggest studios to produce. They're usually large in scope, require copious amounts of expensive CGI, and ideally stem from a well-known literary source to give the film a built-in audience on opening weekend. This is doubly true for children's fantasy as the wee little ones require enough spectacle and effects to keep them coming back to the theater again and again. So what do you do if you don't have a production deal with Walt Disney or Walden Media? What do you do if your film is based on a book with immense popularity... in New Zealand? You hire Weta Workshop for their special effects wizardry and Sam Neill for his general bad-assery. That's what. But will it be enough...? Theo (Tom Cameron) and Rachel (Sophie McBride) are twins living in New Zealand who share the gift of psychic ability and the curse of being red-heads. They've »

In one fell swoop, my opinion of "Daybreakers" has shifted from "mildly interested" to "holy wow I want to see this now." Okay fine. I was more than mildly interested. The cast, which includes Ethan Hawke, Willem Dafoe and Sam Neill is exciting on its own. And the poster we revealed a few weeks ago, featuring what appears to be a blood farm, is undeniably cool.
But the images we have for you today, part of an MTV Movies Blog week filled with awesome exclusives, seal the deal. Particularly the one you can see a snippet of right here: Willem Dafoe wielding a shotgun/crossbow and giving you the crazy eye. Kickass. The story follows a renegade group of vampires trying to restore humanity to a blood-sucker ruled world. January 8, 2010 seems very far away right now...

The Tom Clancy books focusing on CIA agent, John Ryan that spawned movies, The Hunt for Red October, Patriot Games, Clear and Present Danger and The Sum of All Fears are all in my list of all-time favourite action movies. The books that Clancy has written were all be converted from the page to the screen brilliantly. They’ve also had excellent casts with high profile actors playing the lead role of Jack Ryan.
Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford and Ben Affleck have all played the part and today, Variety are reporting that next to take on the lead is Captain Kirk…. I mean Chris Pine!!
The movie has no name as yet but the two books that haven’t yet been made into movies are ‘Red Rabbit’, about a plot to kill the Pope; and ‘The Cardinal of the Kremlin’, where Ryan is still a CIA analyst working his way up the ranks. »

From Lionsgate, here’s the latest poster for the brothers Spierig’s vampire/horror/sci-fi movie “Daybreakers”, which may be channeling a little bit of the brothers Wachowski’s “Matrix”. Just a tad. “Daybreakers” stars Ethan Hawke, Willem Dafoe and Sam Neill and is set in the near future where most of the world’s populations have become vampires and taken over society. But what happens when the human population, fed on by the vampires, starts to dwindle? Bad things, kids, very bad things. After hitting the festival circuits, “Daybreakers” lands in theaters January 8, 2010. »

Looking at this poster, you might think it's a scene out of "The Matrix." You'd be wrong though. "Daybreakers" is a vampire flick that hits theaters on January 8, 2010. This is no "Twilight" though. "Daybreakers"' vampires live for human blood, none of that "vegetarian" nonsense. And that's what you see in the poster revealed after the jump: a vampire-run blood farm.
The story is set in 2019, a dystopian future Earth which has been ravaged by a living plague that turns the human population into vampires. The story follows a rebel group among the vampires, blood-suckers who want a return to the human condition. If the story isn't enough to snare you, take a look at the cast: Ethan Hawke, Willem Dafoe and Sam Neill all star. Peep the new poster, revealed exclusively on MTV.com, after the jump.

One of the many films that premiered at this year’s Toronto Film Festival was The Spierig Brothers “Daybreakers”. The film stars Ethan Hawke as a brilliant vampire hematologist (blood expert) and he lives in a world where most humans have been turned into vampires due to a plague. Unfortunately, with a vampire society so large, they’ve killed most of the remaining humans and they’re relying on Hawke to provide a blood substitute. The film also stars Sam Neill, Isabel Lucas, and Willem Dafoe.
While I wasn’t sure what to expect going in, I was surprised by how much I liked the movie. It’s a high concept film that also plays as a vampire movie. I think audiences are going to like it when Lionsgate releases it this January. Anyway, while at the festival, I got to interview The Spierig Brothers and you can read our conversation after the jump. »

In "Daybreakers", the latest film by the Spierig Brothers, the year is 2019 and vampires rule the earth. It's ten years after a single bat bite triggered a viral epidemic that transformed the bulk of the human race into undead bloodsuckers, and society has altered accordingly. The streets are mostly empty during the day, blood is the chief economic good, and the purity of your plasma is directly proportionate to how much money you make. Ed (Ethan Hawke) is a vampire hematologist who has spent every year since the transformation trying to synthesize a plasma substitute; he's hoping to give vampire-kind an alternative to blood-farming the few remaining humans left on the planet. After a chance encounter with a group of human resistance fighters that include ex-vampire Willem Dafoe, Ed »
