When a legendary movie franchise returns after a long hiatus, the results don.t usually seem to be pretty. In 1990, The Godfather Part III attempted to live up to its two classic predecessors and failed miserably; it offered a decent flick at best, but not one that remotely compared to the earlier movies.
The Star Wars series returned from a 16-year break with 1999.s The Phantom Menace. Though the flick earned tons of money, it inspired widespread derision from fans. Very few . if any - find the .Prequel Trilogy. to match up to the .Original Trilogy., and many fans see Phantom Menace as the worst of the bunch.
Back in the 1980s, the Indiana Jones films reigned supreme. 1981.s Raiders of the Lost Ark, 1984.s Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and 1989.s Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade all found massive audiences and entertained a generation of fans.

The BBC's new Saturday night drama Merlin got off to an impressive start last night, despite going up against The X Factor in the ratings. The new retelling of Arthurian legend focuses on the wizard's uncharted younger days and stars Richard Wilson, Anthony Head and John Hurt. The 13-episode first series has also been bought by NBC in the US, where it will air from next January. The first episode had an average of 6.65m (30%) over 45 minutes from 7.30pm, while on ITV1, ratings juggernaut The X Factor brought in 9.26m (41.7%) over an hour. The audience for Merlin was steady throughout but grew towards the end with a peak of 6.82m (30.3%) at 8.10pm. Before Merlin, the new series of Strictly Come Dancing launched with 7.99m (42.7%) over 80 minutes from 6.10pm. The audience climbed steadily from 6.41m (39%) at 6.15pm to a peak (more)

While it was first reported that Helen Mirren was supposed to be making the new Jon Amiel film The Angel Makers, it turns out that another superb actress, Charlotte Rampling, will in fact be playing the lead role. I've read some conflicting reports about the origins of this movie, but tt seems there is a book written by Jessica Gregson that is actually based on a historic crime called The Angel Makers of Nagyrév. Here's more details (http://www.screendaily.com/ScreenDailyArticle.aspx?intStoryID=40746 Category=467) from Screen Daily: Charlotte Rampling will star alongside Daniel Bruhl and Anna Friel in London-based The Producers' First World War dark comedy Angel Makers, which Jon Amiel will direct. Benno Furmann, Moritz Bleibtreu, Anne-Marie Duff and John Hurt round out the key cast. The Producers principal Jeanna Polley is producing and is currently scouting for locations. One of the best miniseries in the history of television will soon get a big screen makeover, courtesy of director Jim Sheridan. Dark Horizons reports that Sheridan (My Left Foot, In the Name of the Father) will adapt Robert Graves' classic historical drama I, Claudius.
The novel was immediately praised upon its release in 1934 and has long been considered one of the best novels of the 20th Century. Claudius eventually became one of the greatest and most progressive Roman emperors, despite being afflicted with most likely either Tourette's Syndrome or cerebral palsy.
Graves' book was turned into an epic ten-episode BBC miniseries in the 1970s, which starred Derek Jacobi, John Hurt, Patrick Stewart, and others.
Relativity Media will produce this new version of I, Claudius, which has no production date scheduled yet. Just about a year ago, there were reports that Leonardo DiCaprio and screenwriter William Monahan were interested

As his space craft comes to rest in the fjords of ancient Norway, it’s with dismay that Kainan realizes that he wasn’t the only survivor. A second passenger, a Moorwen also emerges from the wreckage. While I find it amusing that Canadian pop artist Feist is featured prominently in a film celebrating the boroughs and atmosphere of New York City, the trailer for New York, I Love You (making its debut at the Toronto International Film Festival in a few weeks) is embedded after the Jump.
Like Paris je t’aime before it, the director and actors involved this thing is incredible. The full actor/director list is here. Twitch regulars should be interested that Park Chan-Wook, Faith Akin, Jiang Wen, Shunji Iwai, Yvan Attal, and Andrei Zvyanginstev are directing segments; and a variety of actors are involved, including Shu Qi, Maggie Q, John Hurt, Carla Gugino, Eli Wallach and James Caan

Embedded above is the trailer for New York, I Love You, an anthology of shorts from the producers of the similar Paris, Je T'aime, and going off this taste alone, I'd be willing to say that this might turn out to be just as winsome as that film was.
Several directors -- among them: Mira Nair, Scarlett Johansson, Natalie Portman, and, um, Brett Ratner -- and even more actors -- including Bradley Cooper, Chris Cooper, Julie Christie, John Hurt, Ethan Hawke, Orlando Bloom, Shia Labeouf, Kevin Bacon, Maggie Q, and again, Portman -- come together with tales of love and life in the various neighborhoods of NYC.
The film is scheduled to make its world premiere at the fast approaching Toronto International Film Festival next month, and if IMDb is to be believed, it'll open in the States next

It looks as if Outlander is getting dumped to DVD on November 18th, or at least it's listed on Amazon.com. In Howard McCain's period piece, during the reign of the Vikings, Kainan (Jim Caviezel), a man from a far-off world, crash lands on Earth, bringing with him an alien predator known as the Moorwen. Though both man and monster are seeking revenge for violence committed against them, Kainan leads the alliance to kill the Moorwen by fusing his advanced technology with the Viking's Iron Age weaponry. Sophia Myles, Jack Huston, Ron Perlman and John Hurt also star in the pic, which features FX work by Patrick Tatopoulos.

For a total of 312 films from 64 different countries. Wow, I wish I could go. Of the remaining announcements in 3 different sections, the most intriguing would have to be Vincent Cassel playing legendary French gangster Jacques Mesrine in Public Enemy No. 1. It's listed as a "work-in-progress" so I guess that means what will be screened is not the final cut. Another I'm looking forward to is The Lucky Ones which stars one of my favorites, Tim Robbins. It's about some returning soldiers who go on a road trip across America. Check out the full list following.

Outlander is probably the most unexpected release of 2008. The concept of an evil alien being battled by Vikings and another (good) alien may sound pretty strange, but somehow it looks like Howard McCain is making it work.
Today another trailer for the film appeared on YouTube, and a good chunk of it shares the same footage found on the previous preview. Nevertheless, Outlander still looks quite badass. With John Hurt, Ron Perlman, and the hotness known as Sophia Myles in the cast ... how can it go wrong?

Jesus has returned.
Jim Caviezel, who was sensational as Christ in Mel Gibson's bloody Bible story, has a new sci-fi flick called Outlander, which, surprisingly enough, is not in any way based on a sport utility vehicle.
Instead, Outlander is about an alien battle on Earth during the reign of the Vikings, although the movie puts it at 709 Ad, about a hundred years before the first Norse Viking raids. Why not just move it up and be a teensy bit more accurate, he asks before remembering this is about an alien war in Norway.
In a way, I dig the concept, much as I admired the basic outline of The 13th Warrior, which, as it happens, isn't much of a movie. The stranger in a strange land premise has served many a movie quite well over the years, and Caviezel's a good enough actor to make it work. He's
